For my firecracker pics I used a 300 mm lens set on manual at f/25 and 1 sec exposure. 300 mm to protect my camera, 1 sec to decrease the luck in timing.

Bill Elliot blasts out of turn four at Talladega, at about 215 mph [pre restrictor-plate era], and 14 seconds ahead of 2nd place. Sadly, his car broke before the race was finished, but it was a pretty amazing display of speed, for NASCAR. Around 1985.

If you look closely, you can see large enough pieces to identify that as a former watermelon. Hydrostatic shock from a 12ga slug is an impressive thing. Clickity-pop for big version.
