Agreed.

and add to that that she was probably right in the first place, who the hell paints a fire hydrant black and white (yeah, yeah, it looks like a dalmatian)? I sure as hell like them visible and easy to find in my neighborhood.

Common sense in justice? Really?

Painting a fire hydrant could lead to (up to) 90 days in jail and a $500 fine?

Excuse my French, but that's farking retarded overkill.

Fire hydrants end up yellow anyway.

from a better article (here):

Haller was pleased with the verdict.

"It's probably one of the best examples I've ever seen of law in America," she said, also encouraging others to repaint hydrants if they feel they need to.

"If it's a safety factor, get out and paint them so they can be seen," she said.

Haller added that even though she has lost wages during the past several months, she probably won't file suit for damages against the city.

"I don't think I'm going to bother," she said. "I'm sick of it. I clean my hands of the city of Mount Clemens. I've got done what I have to."

If I ever meet this woman, I will buy her a drink.

Wait, 68? Make that an issue of Cat Fancy

Ok, this is about the stupidest farking thing I have ever heard of. In some cities, hydrants ARE yellow. I would have loved to see the backlash if the judge had actually tried to send her to jail.

"The Hydrant in the Detroit suburb of Mount Clemens had been painted white with black spots in August by children as part of a citywide art project,"

With all the snow they get why would the paint it white

2009-02-16 9:00:36 PM
If a bunch of children were able to get permission to paint it black and white then I don't see why she couldn't have asked first. She would have saved a lot of trouble.

I'd say "The Air Force", but I know they paint their hydrants brown.
/at least all the ones on Hickam AFB are brown. Can't have that jarring effect of a yellow post disturbing the peace of the officer's housing, now can we?

I'm confused, if they went through all this trouble for the woman painting it back to normal, then what happened to the kids who painted it black and white? Was everyone involved with the "art" project also prosecuted?

2009-02-16 9:05:50 PM
I surprised it wasn't a felony.

2009-02-16 9:11:03 PM
it seems like just about all the fire hydrants in Ann Arbor are painted. In fact we've painted them once or twice for giggles. Usually something like a tiny mural, although I recall a dalmation fire hydrant in ann arbor as well.

I would have figured that the fire fighters have a map of where all the hydrants are located.

2009-02-16 9:12:36 PM
You can celebrate as much as you want, but the world would be a better place if we took her out of the workforce and fed her 3 square meals a day in a jail cell for 90 days, so that maybe next time she won't target polka dot hydrants anymore.

I suppose the old lady shouldn't have been prosecuted, but she should be given some crossword puzzles or knitting supplies because she obviously has too much free time if she's patrolling fire hydrants.

2009-02-16 9:16:58 PM
This is farked up not only because they busted an old lady but that fire hydrant NEVER should have been painted black and white in the first place. The color of hydrants actually has significance:
Standard is yellow or white depending on the amount of pressure the supply line contains. White is usually in rural areas and have more pressure than an urban yellow hydrant. This rule, however is not always followed.
RED= hydrant is on PRIVATE property and is paid for by the property owner therefore it is not to be used by the fire department without permission from the property owner.
Black= a fire hydrant that is no longer active, usually it has been replaced somewhere nearby.

2009-02-16 9:20:00 PM
Sounds like the cranky old biddie didn't like the kid's art project. Probably worried about her property values.

/This, and if someone paints a hydrant and paints the Stem Nut or the discharge outlet shut, it can cost extra time trying to open the hydrant. Of course, it can be opened, but in a fire, every second counts.
/I do NOT condone the arrest of this old lady, BTW. Just stating the (not so) obvious

Ok - the city OK'd the painting project - so obviously there is a city full of off colour hydrants. In my town all the hydrants had been painted. Yes one even like a dalmatian. We got tons of snow. And rural hydrants? Are you nuts? what kind of moronic municipality would have rural fire hydrants? For farksake, i drank from a goddamn dugout for the first 16 years of my life and your telling me that some places will run pressurized water out to butfark nowhere for fire fighting? Maybe we just live in different places...

The fire department has a map of all the hydrants in the city. They don't arrive on site and wildly search for a hydrant. Someone would say - "OK the hydrant is near this address or this corner". This is a city project and was likely OK'd by the fire department. they know where the hydrants are, and they know they might be dressed up in children's paint. If the fire department is aware of it, and ok with it then whats the problem??????

To me? this old bag sounds like a self righteous old bag. And it sounds like the judge felt he had better things to do then fine some baggy old pain in the ass who would only raise more of a fuss.

Those are local customs. Many cities have adopted the NFPA 291 standard, here (new window) is an example.

Actually here they have blue reflectors in the middle of the road to tell the fireman where the hydrants are. And yes I am telling you we have hydrants in the more rural areas, this is San Diego if you look at us funny we burst into flames.

Protip: Don't ever paint your fire hydrant, if it looks like crap or anything is wrong with it at all: Call the Fire Department and simply tell them what and where.

What you can do it when it snows, shovel the hydrant out if you are able ASAP or put a TALL stick with a RED/SAFETY ORANGE TRIANGLE flag on it if you know the plows come by and bury the thing under a glacier.

It's your house that's going to burn down, so you might just want to think about your where your nearest fire hydrant is and how long it will take to hook up to it. tick-tock.

If my house is going to burn down, I'd be happy to shovel a bit of extra snow on that biatch.

/no memories that can't be replaced with a check from the insurance company

Haller argued safety was at stake, and the black-and-white hydrant would be difficult to see in the winter.

She's right, and this whole thing is stupid.

2009-02-16 11:45:19 PM
hmmmm....I thought most places had already marked the hydrants with GPS coordinates so the firefighters can find them no matter what color they are....At least they did in my old bumfark town of 10,000 people....

I love how many folks are talking about how the firefighters have GPS to find the hydrants, etc etc etc.

The hydrants aren't painted visibly to let the firefighters see them. They're also painted so that people see them and don't block them.

2009-02-17 1:19:45 AM
One of the reasons some agencies paint different the tops of public fire hydrants different colors is to have a visual idea of how much PSI comes out of that hydrant. That in turn helps determine what kind of hoses and fittings to connect depending on the type of fire they are dealing with, but also to make sure they don't pump past the capacity of the hydrant.

Rural Alberta and rural California...

Yeah those are two different rurals... Here in Alberta the economics of laying firehydrant pipes into litterally this:

Hate to inject reality here, but, in many places, hydrants are color-coded by the amount of flow they're capable of delivering. 500 gallon per minute might get red, 750 yellow, 1000+ green, that sort of thing. Black & white may mean something very specific to the FD in that area, and yellow either means nothing, or means the wrong thing for that hydrant.

Getting enough water on a fire is kinda important.

Ahh yes, find some way to blame this on the cop. In most of these cases of frivolous charges, someone calls and complains and makes a stink, and the cop merely enforces an ordinance at the request of the citizen. Then all of a sudden every moron is yelling 'Stupid cops!'. Ridiculous.

Most likely, one of the parents of the kids who originally painted the hydrant got annoyed and called in the cops. I doubt very seriously that a cop just happened to catche her painting the hydrant.

Maybe the hydrant was high pressure but partially inactive.
