Well, since you already have firefights between the CIA and DEA, you don't necessarily want to get the marines involved too, do you?

You won't think of anything else for a VERY long time.

Does mum count?

Heh, back in 89' when I was stationed in San Diego, we just had to be back over the border by 10pm. TJ was a fun, if dangerous place.

But not quite good enough for Mexico.

whether for official business, to visit family or for free time, known in the military as rest and relaxation or R&R.

Isn't it known everywhere as R&R? or have I missed something?

I remember reading about a genuine A-Team style shootout where two mexican cartels clashed around a bar(?). Both parties exchanged hundreds of rounds of machine gun fire, one group lobbed a few grenades and fired a damn anti-tank rocket into the bar.

Nobody was killed, nobody was seriously injured.

/Hannibal and Faceman wanted for questioning.

I've been to TJ during the night (haven't been for about a decade).

It wasn't a place you would want to hang out at night. And 10 years later, it's worse.

I know guys who have seen /a/ donkey show, and they report that it's a scam. The donkey is female and the uniquely unattractive woman just gyrates on top of it while two guys hold the hooves in the air.

I think I'd ask for my money back.

I went to TJ back in 95, had a damn good time. Apparently things have changed for the worse. This also seems to be an understatement.

Because at least Tijuana is a known quantity. You close that border crossing and you'll shake things up, causing another god awful border town to spring up somewhere else.

I'm a San Diego native, and I've been to TJ exactly three times. Once was on a junior high school fieldtrip to the Tijuana Cultural Center (yes, they really have one). Once was at 19, at night, and my friends got drunk and I was the one too scared to drink at all. (Wiping your tushy with one paper towel is hurty and not fun.) Third time was with my boyfriend at the time, and we went during the day so he could get some cheap boots for a Ren faire.

I have heard LOTS of horror stories about TJ, even in HS (before you had to be 18 to go down there).

Funny story, I used to work at Blockbuster, and Mario Lopez would patronize our shop from time to time. He'd always leave his stupid business cards around the store for his club on Revolucion. Asswipe.

I guess so. One could still make the case that it would be worth it.

Just below San Diego
Tijuana, land of broken dreams
Senoritas dancing in the moonlight
Flashing Spanish dark eyes to everyone, it seems

They say "Hey, gringo
Can you take us across the border?
Just tell them I'm your daughter
of a local."

Down the backstreets, through the alleys
All the young men stand with pride
They guard the palace to the kingdom
Called Tijuana, their heritage they decide

They say "Hey, gringo
Can you take us across the border?
We'll work for just a quarter
On the other side"

Well, in the Marines' defense, at least the guys going to Iraq are being armed. If we sent Marines to TJ as well armed, I doubt they'd have too many problems. Although I'm not sure the Mexican govt would appreciate it ...

TJ was dangerous, and remains dangerous, for about as long as my memory serves. If it's gotten worse, that's tragic.

When I lived in San Diego 4 years ago I remember the Marine's toying with this, not because of danger to the marines per se, but because they'd get drunk and crash their cars on the 5 on their way back to Pendleton. It happened too many times--it was pretty frequent as I remember.

So, in closing, if things are so bad that the Jarheads, whom are trained to fight cannot go to Tijuana, then we should all stay the hell out of TJ.

Back in 2003 some buddies of mine headed to TJ for a weekend trip. You can have a hellava time for pretty cheap, if you argue prices on everything. They did have some ATM card scam going, and two of our friends ventured off alone and some locals tried to rob them. One of the two that was being mugged studied alot of MMA, so nothing bad happened. Lesson learned, stay on Revolution Blvd if you ever go there.
