So when does Khalid Sheikh Muhammed get to go home already?

2009-01-21 1:59:59 AM
While Obama doesn't want to put more fuel on the fire by investigating the Bush administrations illegal practices, a good chunk of the truth will come out as a natural result of putting and end to it.

People will finally feel free to speak out.

arkansas: So when does Khalid Sheikh Muhammed get to go home already?

He will likely be tried in a normal district court with a civilian jury, real public access, and a lawyer if he'll accept one. For justice to be done, it must be seen to be done. The man wants to be a martyr and gives every appearance of being proud of 9/11. I'm fine with giving him every legal protection on the road to his date with a needle.

YES!

Who is imprisoned at Gitmo? That's a serious question. If they are people who became arrested in the early days of the Bush administration, they are no longer valuable as sources of intelligence and should be exposed during their trials as terrorists. They have no current information about Bin Laden.

Uh. Wait. Where's that Bin Laden fellow again?

2009-01-21 2:25:18 AM
I agree with the president.

Wow. That felt good.

2009-01-21 2:25:23 AM
One day on the job, and he's already exceeded my expectations. Obama is so awesome.

/I can't help it. I inhaled the hope.
//Obama's coming to Canada in February, I'm already practicing opening wide, and I'm 5000 km away from where he'll be visiting

Translation, he wants to get his judicial officials in before he prosecutes a bunch of terrorists.

/meh
//Give them a fair trial

It's a start.

Wow. He pledged to take quick action on guantanamo, and he actually started the process the first day. A politician doing what they promised? The 2012 predicters might be right..

I enjoyed the Bush quote at the bottom. Yea, it was just the "elites" that hated America, everyone else wanted to cradle our collective balls.

So wait... it was effective in dealing with alleged enemy combatants and for gathering good intelligence?

I'm not sure on this, Lets see there are currently 250ish people in prision there. 60 or so of which have been found not guilty, but no country wants to take them in. Yeah sitting on our hands for 100 days makes sense. Since when do non-citizens or at least residents/visitors get american trial by jury and rights? I say give them an aphgani trial. Since many of those in power are affiliated witht he former northern alliance that'll work well.

There's no way America is returning to the rule of law. That's like uncrossing the Rubicon. What will these screeching banshees do when their scumbag hate is no longer accepted by normal society? You can't expect them all to slink back to their militia meetings and loner cabins, can you?

2009-01-21 2:30:44 AM
An excellent start.

14 hours? FARK YES! I'm starting to feel hope. I'm starting to believe he might actually carry out what he has said. I'm scared, I got used to disappointment from the President for 8 years.

Holy shiat, talk about having to live a thousand 9/11s everyday.

8 years of being "worked on" without trial by our proud boys overseas would build a lot of resentment. They were terrorists before, now their like super pissed terrorists. I wouldn't be suprised if these dudes even picked up some of our kick-ass torture tactics while they were locked up.

What part of "the worst of the worst" did you fail to comprehend.
Well, looks like your sick, progresive Nightmare-state has just became reality.

We tried to warn you that he was a Muslim simpathiser. You said: "No he's a Christian." There's no christians in Kenya n00btards. Libs are silly creatures, indeed.

So when will we get to see MORE Guitmo releasees killed in Combat in Afganistan and Iraq as Insurgents?

Maxor:

That pesky constitution gets in the way. Sixth amendment to the constitution of the United States of America opens with In all criminal prosecutions, the accused shall enjoy the right to a speedy and public trial.

Maybe you fell asleep in civics class as a kid, so I'll explain why we give people fair trials: So that when YOU PERSONALLY are arrested for something you did not commit you don't spend 10 years in prison awaiting to clear your name.

No exceptions. The moment we starting making exceptions, we've started down a VERY dangerous road.

I have a real problem with the executive branch interfering with the judicial branch. Bush did it and now Obama is doing it.

This is not a good thing.

2009-01-21 2:37:46 AM
Headline isn't accurate. Guantanamo stays in place, at least for now. What changed is that all ongoing and existing prosecutions have been frozen for 120 days. Presumably to roll them into more of a US federal court system instead of a military court system.

2009-01-21 2:38:28 AM
I hope he ends the Cuban embargo.

It's a polyp up Bush's ass affectionately named by Cheney on 9/12.

Serious.

It is a strip of land on the south coast of Cuba, it is a deep water harbor, that was starting to be used by the US immediately after the Spanish American war and was in 1903 granted to the US as a naval base of perpetual lease by the cuba government at that time. Castro's governement doesn't like it there but neither castro has been ballsy enough to really try anthing. Sometimes people the US doesn't like get captured and taken to this nice tropical locale to be safely questioned.

Actually, I simply see this as
Obama: -1
Bush: History

WTF? Shouldn't we be trying these people, determining if they're guilty in some sort of court at least and either returning them to their respective countries or hanging them?

Gitmo is a military installation. The military prosecutors are also under his command as CIC. He's well within his authority to do this.

This is not the executive branch messing with the judicial branch. Since these people have not been charged and are being held under military jail, it falls under military jurisdiction. Therefore it is the presidents jurisdiction.
