"The new supercomputer, which will become operational later this year, will emit 14,400 tonnes of CO2 a year," said Dave Britton, the Met Office's chief press officer. This is equivalent to the CO2 emitted by 2,400 homes - generating an average of six tonnes each a year."

Well, yeah... but you should see what it can do with Crysis!

Pointless anyhow, all it told them was 42.

FTFA: When it is finally completed, around 2011 the Met Office machine will be the second most powerful machine in Britain with a total peak performance approaching 1 PetaFlop - equivalent to over 100,000 PCs and over 30 times more powerful than what is in place today.

But will it be able to run the next version of Windows without needing an upgrade?

But it still can't run GTA IV at a decent frame rate.

Spare BTUs from computers are great at heating buildings. More 'super computers' should be placed near or underneath facilities that could use their heat during colder months of the year, and then vent waste heat outside vs. using a air conditioning during the hotter months.

That's what I do.

As for the computer's electrical consumption 'carbon output,' place it near a hydro, or -shudder- a nuclear plant. There, no more carbon footprint.

Emit? All by itself? I didn't know supercomputers contained their own power plants.

I mean, my desktop computer emits CO2 from the fan, but I'm pretty sure it's the same CO2 it sucked in from the other end.

I have two old 7U quad Xeons that I keep in my basement... I call them my space heaters.

They're actually kinda nice to rest your feet on on cold nights.

I believe this was also the case for Crays back in the 70s and CDCs in the 60s.

The data center I work at has its own substation. The mainframes we use have power cables where each AC phase has a wire thicker than my thumb. Then we have the rows and rows of bladeservers.

I don't want to imagine the utility bill of that place.

True, but its also fair to say that the utility bill is cheaper than the amount of money that the workers would spend on girlfriends (if they had them).

These dumbasses seem to be both. Except that there really isn't a problem.
