I don't think you're supposed to eat library books, are you? Nanny state strikes again.

Wow...this act is having all kinds of bizarre unintended consequences.

2009-01-18 12:52:59 PM
From the article: The American Libraries Assocation is lobbying Capitol Hill to exclude public and school libraries from the new law. If not, it said millions of books will be taken off the shelves and destroyed or kids won't be allowed in the libraries.

And the problem with no kids in the libraries is?

2009-01-18 12:55:41 PM
They could just burn all the books and the problem would be solved.

Normally I would agree with you, because I hate kids in any public area especially the grocery store. However, banning kids from libraries means we get stupid kids. Then they grow up, join frats, and vote Republican. And that's not good for any of us anymore.

You'll have to get an EPA permit for the toxic emissions. Maybe you can buy some pollution credits from a power plant.

We've got some pretty messed up priorities in this country. Maybe start with improving the security of our food supply? Little Timmy is more likely to get food poisoning from his diet than lead poisoning from a book.

Before I RTFA, I thought it was some dumbass censorship thing.

This is even stupider than that.

I'll just say, "Won't someone please think of the children!" and the book burning law will get fast-tracked.

We should start a public education initiative to teach our children to not lick books.

Let's hear it for hastily enacted, knee-jerk legislation!

"CPSC does not want to take books away from kids. We want to encourage reading but also have kids with safe products," said Scott Wolfson, of the CPSC.

HOW ABOUT THIS BOOK?

Good. Kids read far too many books nowadays.

They should be stuck in front of the TV, like we were back in the good old days.

/I hope the sarcasm was obvious enough.

This is one drawback of having a political system in which the only qualifications a politician must have is citizenship and age.

Shouldn't there at least be a minimum standards test? Kind like what No Child Left Behind mandates?

Seriously, how much lead could there possibly be in a friggin' book? Not enough to make anyone sick I think, even if they lick books for some reason.

Most PC peripherals and components, even today with the RoHS act, are horribly contaminated with toxic residue and components.

People who handle new cables, cards, pieces parts should wear gloves and make every effort to not to inhale too deeply or lick their fingers or touch their eyes, mouth etc.

I think the State of California has warning labels on PC stuff specifically warning pregnant mothers of these hidden dangers. But everyone should take note.

Lead in ink on a book page? Same idea.

And the way the rest of this stupid law reads affects all sorts of small vendors, including people running yard sales or second hand clothing stores. The law makes no provision for selling of used merchandise, so Goodwill and St Vincent de Paul are also on the hook. Talk about using a broad brush. Typical over-reaching government. Just because the Feds can't figure out how to get the Chinese to comply with our laws concerning lead content in kids' toys.

What ever happened to taking personal responsibility for your (or your children's) actions? Lead in Books? come on people, is this really that much of a threat? Better ban money next...do you know what goes into some coins? And even worse what is present on over 40% of US paper currency?

I can't help but think, "Well, I hope this affects SOMEONE." I'm not clear on if kids even go to libraries anymore.

I seem to recall a few years ago some electricians got lead poisoning by stripping wire coatings with their teeth. Seems there was lead in them thar coatings.

The FBI is at your door and would like a word with you about your mattress tags.

Let's just ban lead. And sue Mother Earth for ever possessing it.

2009-01-18 3:35:16 PM
Experts said there could be trace amounts of lead in books because of the ink. That's why the government wants all books, old and new, tested for lead.

Best use of asinine tag I've seen in a long time.

How about make government more of a meritocracy and severely cut the number of political appointments that can be made? Instead drastically extend something like the foreign service exam to include most of what are now political appointments.

Chinese civil servant exams created stable empires for thousands of years.

Ha! Have you heard the Republicans screaming for the past 40 years that we need to dumb down admissions standards to admit unqualified students into colleges, teach ebonics in high school and generally drop educational standards in the name of social engineering?

I believe the Republicans were the ones trying to advise against such schemes. Nomesane?
