Well, methane is a pretty good indicator of organic activity, and they first detected it years ago, so new shiat has come to light, man.

Any Farkstronomers here that can tell me what I saw in the SW sky last night around 7:00? I'm in coastal NC. I think it was a planet but I don't know which one.

Venus is far brighter than even the brightest actual star in the sky, Sirius. Look at Orion's Belt (in the southeastern sky at a reasonable hour). Follow the belt to the left and down. The belt will "point" just above Sirius.

A neat free program that makes this easy is Stellarium. I don't have a link since I'm posting from my phone, but it's an awesome program.
