To Brian Wilkinson, editor of the online site X-Fan (x-mencomics.com/xfan/), Marvel's argument is appalling. The X-Men -- mere creatures? "This is almost unthinkable," he says. "Marvel's super heroes are supposed to be as human as you or I. They live in New York. They have families and go to work. And now they're no longer human?"

DUDE, they never were! They're pretend. made up. FICTION.

Move out of your Parent's basement.

The discrimination of mutants has begun.

best comment... said it perfectly
2003-01-20 11:18:53 PM
pretty soon you'll see mutant registration being mandatory and The Sentinels will be created to impose such laws.
2003-01-20 11:19:20 PM
I other news, shortly after loading up Slashdot, reader remarks "Dude, I've gotta submit this to fark!".

2003-01-20 11:21:40 PM

2003-01-20 11:21:54 PM
Chuck Austen, current author of Marvel's "Uncanny X-Men" comic-book series, is also incredulous. He has worked hard for a year, he says, to emphasize the X-Men's humanity, to show "that they're just another strand in the evolutionary chain."

I wonder what gene sequence not only lets me walk though walls, but also lets my clothes and other possessions become insubstansial as well.

What about the one that lets me shoot energy beams out of my eyes. And what is the caloric requirements of that?
2003-01-20 11:22:30 PM
Just an excuse for Bush to roll out the Sentinels?
2003-01-20 11:22:53 PM
This is the nerdiest thing I have read all day.
2003-01-20 11:23:23 PM

You and Rumsfeld
2003-01-20 11:24:09 PM
People actually go to school for decades and make 6 figure salaries to sit around and deliberate on meaningless crap like this. Asshats. Well no, actually they're not because they're making the big bucks for pontificating over and fondling action figures. But someone's an asshat in all this.
2003-01-20 11:24:25 PM
Two things:
First would Peter Parker be considered a human now? He isn't a mutant or an alien?

If i make a human shape vibrator would it be no longer be considered a "toy"?
2003-01-20 11:25:32 PM
''Eh,'' said one rational person to the wind.
2003-01-20 11:25:41 PM
Does anyone else realize that 99% of mutations are sterile, while the remaining 1% isn't a step up from the parents? Basically, if you're a mutant, you're either worse off than the rest of us, or you can't have kids. So really, why worry here?
2003-01-20 11:26:00 PM
*comic geeks go nuts at this news*
What they're doing is imitating Wolverine's beserker attack.

Never woulda guessed.

sweet, i may have sparked another boring as hell political debate on fark

oh wait the last one hasn't ended yet, can there be more than one going on at a time?
2003-01-20 11:26:31 PM
let's hear it for the political message of a toy line being crushed out by economic pressures!
2003-01-20 11:26:49 PM
This is proof that there is such thing as "the wrong kind" of geeks.
2003-01-20 11:27:03 PM
Two words to the X-nerd folks: WHO CARES?
2003-01-20 11:27:13 PM
Okay, lemme get this straight...

Marvel was trying to convince the US Int'l Trade Court that the action figures they are importing from China should properly be classified as "toys" instead of "dolls" to enjoy lower duty fees. They did this by pointing out that the X-Men have enough nonhuman characteristics to be passed off as toys.

And the fans are upset by this because they can't stand the idea of their cherished comic book heros being labelled as "nonhuman".

Oh well. I suppose this is what happens when you are a jobless 35-year-old virgin who sits around reading comic books all day while the world passes you by.
2003-01-20 11:27:17 PM
its sad that a judge spent all that time thinking about this....like there was no actual cases going on? "hmm..this double murder case...or the what are the xmen thing...?..xmen!"
musta been a slow day at work huh?
2003-01-20 11:28:27 PM
I guess Jesus, Elijah and Moses, who "use their extraordinary and unnatural ... powers on the side of good" aren't human either. So: robots, mutants or aliens?
2003-01-20 11:28:27 PM
I feel a great swell of pity for that judge.

/not-so-clever movie reference
2003-01-20 11:28:42 PM
... ... ... WHAT?!?!?!

IS THIS THE MOST WE HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT!? It must be great to live in a dimension that has so few problems as these guys!!
2003-01-20 11:29:32 PM
Marvel subsidiary Toy Biz Inc. pushed Judge Barzilay to declare its heroes nonhuman so it could win a lower duty rate on action figures imported from China

'nuff said.
2003-01-20 11:29:43 PM
they're not human anymore? damn, now i guess i have to fall out of love with my girl rogue. i'm not down with the inter-species breeding thingy, and i doubt she is either. i'm so disappointed. she's such a lovely person, one of the nicest i've ever had the pleasure of knowing. its a terrible shame.

what would MLK think of this bullsh*t?

"Nonhuman? How DARE they!"
2003-01-20 11:31:21 PM
Wah. So their toys aren't human. Neither are their imaginary girlfriends.

Although, it was this kind of wackiness that started the X-tinction Agenda.
2003-01-20 11:31:23 PM
I just realized the symbolic implications of this. Too funny....

Don't worry...you will be assimilated.
2003-01-20 11:32:36 PM
I saw the movie and liked it. That is about all I know about the X-men. Oh yeah, I also learned that Anna Paquin is a hottie.
