This has happened a lot.. one dealer bought an entire city block in Mexico so he could build a tunnel to the house he bougt across the border. Man that was a real party house though.

Cool! Sounds like an adventure, like the Goonies!
2003-01-14 03:41:31 AM
I hadn't realised so many people wanted to escape the oppressive regime in Arizona.
2003-01-14 03:41:56 AM

That's Nogales for you. It would probably be cheaper to buy out the entire town and move it somewhere else than it would to keep the so-called "war on drugs" going there. This is like the umpteenth time I have heard this story told about Nogales and tunnels.

You have to wonder why that town exists except for a place for Border Patrol agents and Customs (and criminals). And put them all together and you've got a recipie for baaaaad temptation.

We could use these wetbacks in Boston.

Hey as long as theres enough jobs for everyone I have no problem with this. I dont know many white people who would choose to be gardeners or janitors over the many other professions available.
2003-01-14 03:55:32 AM
They say "wetback" in Pulp Fiction, so you know it's fine to say...

Plenty of jobs, my ass! I live in Texas, and it took me almost a year after getting laid off to find a job. Most of the places that turned me down were restaurants, grocery stores, etc. Places that probably have at least one illegal working there. I have no problem with immigration, just take the time to come in legally, and we'll be fine. On an unrelated note, Goonies is my favorite movie ever, and Ny-Quil Driver's comment made Mt. Dew shoot out of my nose.

I lived in *&^%@#! Nogales years back & have no idea why this would be news. There are so many damned holes in the border there that even having a border is pointless. When they do catch the Mexicans making it over they just drive them back. Next day it's the same thing. Anyone stupid enough to move across the border through those tunnels has a death wish. It's only a matter of which we kill you first, the drug dealers or the bacteria living within. The canal running straight through Nogales leaks underground and is one of the most toxic waterways known to man. There is nothing that doesn't get dumped in that canal.

I lived in a house overlooking that canal for 2 weeks and was violently ill the entire time. Solution? Dump the damned druglords in that water for 5 minutes, they'll either die or grow wings and fly away.

Is Mexican a race or a nationality?

4 tunnels led from my ex - all of them led to a midget named bob with a gimp leg and a speech impediment - and you think your ego is hurt by not having a job ;)

How can they dig the tunnels to the correct place? I have heard of a tunnel that was dug across a border town in TX, to a place in Mexico. They even put in a factory like rollbar setup so they could slide boxes for 2 kilometers. Is it that close where they can just start digging in the right direction? You think they use GPS tools to pinpoint where to dig? The tunnel, on the US side, ended up in some guys closet about 10 feet under. Thats hard core

What's a yard in metric?
2003-01-14 05:30:48 AM
A little over three feet.

What's a yard in metric?

Basically 1 meter. It's almost exactly the same.

Is Mexican a race or a nationality?

As far as I am concerned, and most Mexicans are concerned, it's both. Mexicans don't have a whole lot of love for the Spaniards (neither do Filipinos) because of how they destroyed the indigineous people/cultures of everything they touched. So to them, Mexican means they are not Spanish. It recognises their Mestiza (mixed race) heritage.

There is also a Mexican organisation around the Southwest US and in many schools called "La Raza" which means "The Race (as in racial). All of the Mexicans I knew *HATED* Guatemalans and would not let them join La Raza.

So Mexicans are people from Mexico, it's a race, and when it suits Political Correctness it's "Mexican-American". Chicano works as well.

Ahora entiendes.
2003-01-14 05:55:32 AM
oooooh, I always thought a yard was about a foot. Well, let it never be said that fark isn't educational...
2003-01-14 06:11:14 AM
now don't we all feel so much safer that they found those four tunnels.now they gotta work on the other 996 of 'um. i wish i could dig a hole and end up in Maui.

I hadn't realised so many people wanted to escape the oppressive regime in Arizona.

Couldn't help myself...
Hillary Flammon: My uncle was born in America.
Nick Rivers: Oh, really?
Hillary Flammond: But he was one of the lucky ones. He managed to escape in a balloon during the Jimmy Carter presidency.

Usually I try to avoid adding conspiratorial slants to threads, but just want to point out that tunnels such as these appear to be an easy way to smuggle anything, including weapons, into the US. For everybody who isn't worried about Iraq, or N Korea, because they could never hit the US with a missile, this should be food for thought.
2003-01-14 08:20:45 AM

Time to step up security in my Windsor Detroit tunnel.
2003-01-14 08:35:54 AM
If they found four, there are probably 400 others they didn't find. Same goes for the coke and weed busts. For every pound/kilo/whatever that gets caught, at least 100 times as much gets by... So much for the war on drugs....
2003-01-14 08:37:08 AM
"dude i'm mexican calling people wetback ain't cool it's racist and my friends think ur a nazi now."

Wetbak isn't racist. It just means you're a new immigrant. I.E. you havn't dried off from the Rio Grande yet. This in no way stereotypes Mexicans. Now, if he called you a bean-eating spick, you might have a point.

I think drugs and maybe firearms are all that's going to be smuggled through a tunnel. No point in making a tunnel unless you're going to use it over and over again. I doubt the smugglers would let them use it. Terror attack=border crakdown=bad for business. If a terrorist wanted to bring a nuke across, they could just stick it in a backpack and walk across.

To be (somewhat precise) one meter is 39.37 inches or one yard, three inches and a hiccup... (hint for the measurement impaired: one meter is LONGER than one yard, significantly so).
