I think the real story is that the Times Online thinks there is a moral dilemma involved in whether or not to eat a living person.

From farther down on the page:
The study asked 40 students to watch a film, then to rate a series of moral dilemmas, such as eating a fellow plane-crash survivor or faking a CV.

Actually, since they are supposed to look the wrong way through binoculars, he isn't "looking through binoculars the correct way", but rather "Looking the wrong way through binoculars the wrong way".
