Most of those illusions were old enough to have whiskers, but there were some cool newer ones. The anamorphic photo of the bottle in the truck was pretty good as was the checkerboard shadow one.

Yes, because we needed to see that image 5 times.

Does anyone else not see #9? The red looks the same on white as it does on black for me.

Missing: Dick Clark as a human. (My favorite optical illusion of all time!)

This is my favorite.
Not only are these two squares the same size, they're the same color. It has something to do with the black line down the middle.

They looked the same to me too. I also couldn't figure out the checkerboard one, how are they the same shade of grey?

This was the only cool one for me.

Square A and B are the same color. I had to get out my color picker and test it just because it was screwing with my head so much.

you can do the crude thing i did - hold up your hands, one 90 degrees off from the other, and form two little windows between your fingers, with in finger between them. line them up so all you can see is the A in one and B in the other, without being able to see any of the other ones. magically, they become the same color. you could probably do the same with a piece of paper by poking a few holes in it, if you can't get your fingers in the right place.

try looking at it, not that its sideways, but youre sideways, and the bottle is upright. and youre fallng towards it.

another illusion you can do on a clear day. lay down on your back. look straight up at the sky. when a plane flys overhead and leaves the white contrail, think of the blue sky as water, the plane as a boat, and the contrail as the wake the boat is leaving.

Slightly OT, but does anyone else find those Circuit City pop up ads incredibly irritating? What exec okay'd an ad that would create negative feelings toward their company?

From TFA: Number 10 "Look closely, the orange circles are the same size...An illusion that plays on our perception of relative size. The first central circle appears smaller than the circle on the right yet they are identical in size. This is the Ebbinghaus Illusion."

Every woman knows this illusion as "surround yourself with fatter girlfriends when you go out clubbing." You'll look skinnier by comparison!

In a way, I was surprised that they didn't use the example of the parking garage with the "floating" direction signs. But still, good find subby, even if it's a slide-show.

I love optical illusions. They illustrate the various subroutines and shortcuts the optic center and cortex use to compress the sheer amount of visual information coming from the eyes into a more easily-processed stream. Although it seems like something must be wrong with the system, it's processing like this that allows you to understand there's a tiger running toward you through the long grass and act on this information before he eats you.

2008-11-26 10:28:21 AM
The checkerboard illusion is obvious if you look at just the corner of the black square just out of the shadow and just the corner of the white square just in the shadow, instead of the ones marked A and B.

And this "Blivet"

Ok you just saved me some embarrassment. I was coming in to call shenanigans. I cut out a piece of paper to only show the two squares and covered my monitor. I guess the background image was still in my memory, because they still looked very different.

Ok, I believe you. But I don't. I need a color printer, dammit.
