All political analysis which reaches the conclusion that we, as a nation, should drink more gin is clearly FULL OF WIN.

[people in 1960] were capable of understanding a concept that we seem to have lost, which is that people who disagree with you politically are not necessarily evil or stupid.

That's the problem with modern politics in a nutshell. It's easy to demonstrate on Fark, but I won't point fingers in a Dave Barry thread.

In the 60's people were, by and large, forced to exchange their opinions face to face. Today we have the totally one sided, and generally anonymous internet where the worst types of people are allowed to spit their venom without reproach and even egged on by others. I know it's a tired cliche but internet IS serious business a lot of the time. In a lot of ways. I think this contributes a lOT to what you're talking about, as do the existence of talk shows which thrive on the seething frustrations of a minority encouraged to feel like a majority and the necessary urgency of all so called 24 hour news networks.
That's what I think

true. I had been on the receiving end of one of those emails expounding on the fact that Obama was a Marxist blah blah blah. I wrote the original emailer (whose email addy was at the top) and said that I thought the email was a disgrace, unChristian and unAmerican. Here's his response, and keep in mind that this man is a Baptist deacon. The second one is an "I second this" response he included from someone else. Easy to do, if you don't actually have to look someone in the eye.

Madam:

My God doesn't not want unborn babies killed, period. My God has taught me you reap what you sew. You don't have it stolen away from you by people who refuse to work and just create children and expecting others (my taxes) to take care of them. I have taught inter city schools. My God believes a man and woman should love and marry each other and have children and a life together. When you make a comment to a person whether it is you wife or a wife to a husband you should honor that comment and not lie. If you will lie to your wife you will lie to the American people. Bill Clinton - the only American Presadent that was a convicted felolon when he took office. Jimmy Carter pardoned him. And yes he was impeached and convicted in part. We had Marines on food stamps. Remember 911 when Bush was trying to get the military back to being capable of getting the job done and correct what Clinton had destroyed. Men should not marry men and animals. Women should now marry women and animals. If you are capable of working you should work and not expect any one including the government to give you a standard of living like someone who does work and tries to help there family. If you create children you are responsible for them not the government. I believe if he and Pelosi do what they say they intend to do and they aren't enough Republicans in the senate to even filibuster them to try to stop them. We will have laws contrary to what our founding fathers designed for our country. We've even got judges making law not following and judging it. I have taught this material and I am a member of the same fraternity of Washington, Jefferson, Franklin, Revere, etc... that founded this country. I know what they believed and wanted because we want the same ideals and prin ciples today as they put in the Constitution, or at least some of us do. Please don't be the same kind of person that put their head in the sand and almost let Hitler take over the world. We do have rights even though we are white. We should have free speech and not be condemned for the very thing other races say about us and it permitted because they aren't white. I hope you spent as much time trying to get capitalists elected and not condemning them, as you spent writing to me. If you want socialism, no freedom of speech, not real freedom of religion as our founding fathers created, please feel free to go to another country. Remember the founders were Christians. They didn't want a State Church that you had to belong to. They wanted that separation. Please remember they were Christian and let the 10 commandants and their belief God guide there decisions on how the country should be. Go to any country you want and I hope they treat you as well as we treat all the illegal aliens that are here taking our recourses which Obama and Pelosi what to give amnesty too. This is still America until the socialist people take over the congress and the white house very shortly. You can have an opinion and I hope you still have your right to voice it after they take it over. Sit in your cloud and just hope things go well for the country. If you really believe that I can get you a real buy on a bridge in Brooklyn. Please don't email me again. Again, I didn't email you! Have a nice day lying to others about how great it's going to be with Obama and Pelosi. MY ADVICE TO YOU IS GET READY, I KNOW YOU ARE GOING TO BE REALLY SURPRISED AND MADE ANGRY WHEN THEY TEAM UP TO FORGET US AND OUR HOPE FOR OUR GREAT COUNTRY! Our hope and guidance from God has made this country the most powerful country on the face of the earth with the highest standard of living in the world. There is no other nation as generous as the United States. If you really want to leave be my guest but please don't lead people down the path of destruction! I still believe you can respect the OFFICE and completely disagree with the person in it!
Bill

Then:

by copy of this email, I am lending my AMEN! to your comments. You cannot compromise principle for the sake of phony unity. You cannot give an inch when it comes to the murder of unborn children, or destroying the free enterprise system(which is the only hope for the poor to ever escape poverty), and you cannot sacrifice the right of free speech just to pacify some esoteric desire by some to "just get along".
Nobody of good will wakes up wanting confrontation, but this country was built on traditional Judeo-Christian ideals, and a willingness to stand firm in the face of tyranny. Make no mistake, socialism is tyranny, and Obama is a socialist. A naive belief that we are not in a battle for the soul of America will not change the reality that this is precisely where we stand.
"A Constitution of government once changed from freedom can never be restored. Liberty once lost is lost forever!"...John Adams

Right. That isn't anything like the worst of it either. If I remember correctly, you've been here forever so i KNOW you've seen much worse even on this site ... let alone the frothing on those freeper type sites(crazy comes in lots of flavors, those guys just immediately come to mind). Where once there was just that one crazy guy on the corner who sat in his garage yelling all kinds of craziness until someone called the cops there are now communities of people who get together an empower each other. All without any real social exchange and without the intervention of reason or ... well, ya know. All the evidence one should need for this is Youtube.com comments. Sigh.

I haunt the Freeper site; my next door neighbor's brother is one of them (and he lives with their mom in the basement). He always comes over there, and whenever I see him he pulls tracts from his pockets to give me about that type of stuff. A lot of them do need professional help.

Etchy333: I noticed in his rant he didn't anything about making sure English is the national language. I think I know why.

Me too. This guy is probably 70 or so, one of my dad's old friends. He's never said this to me before, so I was kind of shocked that he did in print. Illegibl, but still....

Did any of you guys get one? I cut mine into little pieces and mailed it back to them, told them in the accompanying letter to take the pieces and stick each one up their ass one at a time, and never sully my mailbox with that horseshiat again.

2008-11-13 2:55:56 AM
A wee bit off topic, but I'm feeling remarkably disturbed, and just thought I'd share.

I just watched the documentary "Torturing Democracy" on PBS.

Over the spring and summer, my hatred of the Bush administration had largely diminished, to be replaced with a general antipathy and moments of intense annoyance. But, my following of Obama's campaign and Bush's absence from public life had tempered my once seething rage against both him and the trespasses of his government.

An hour and a half documentary brought that all back up. I am disgusted almost to the point of physical illness by the actions of our president, and the spineless, weak-willed sycophants whom he surrounded himself with. There were moments during this film in which I actually wanted to yell, or punch something.

However Obama's administration turns out, I do not believe he will be so egregious in destroying the moral fabric of our nation as his predecessor has been. Barack Obama could pronounce himself a muslim on Inauguration day, he could express, graphically, his desire to anally penetrate famous male models, and he could announce his intention to replace Christmas with a day of hard-work and grim depression, and I would still not assume him to be as.... unamerican... as the man he follows.

Our current president has truly been a travesty of epic proportions. If this country does survive his damage long enough to immortalize him in textbooks, I can only hope they will be every bit as savage as he deserves.

Please, some foreign nation with balls and morality, charge him with war crimes, charge his cronies with war crimes. The world will be all the better if you do.

I actually think he was referring to Carter pardoning draft dodgers, of which he (the writer) includes Clinton. Though I don't think Clinton was ever convicted of anything, but then what in that whole letter actually stands up to any scrutiny.

Except there wasn't a single *fact* in his post. He says he watched a documentary and now *feels* that the Bush Administration degraded the moral fiber (prove it) of this country and then he wishes for a foriegn power to charge the current administration with War Crimes - yea that's just a tad over dramatic in my book.

But then again he could wish me to be kidnapped as well, that is after all, a well balanced feeling to have about a stranger who disagrees with you on an internet board.

While many of Bush's policies have angered the nation and much of the world, the US and the world are better off due to Bush's foreign policy decisions.

Like it or not, the US had to secure a stable and abundant source of oil if the country is to survive the coming decades. With the ever increasing rate of consumption for oil, especially from China and India, oil will become more scarce in the near future. We had to secure more oil to ensure that our country will continue to prosper. In the upcoming years, we cannot solely rely on some of our current, major oil suppliers for our energy needs because some of those countries are extremely unstable and harbor anti-US sentiment.

Plus democracy in the Middle East will likely spread in time, and we can all agree that more democracies in the Middle East will undoubtedly benefit the entire world by ridding the region of evil dictators and increasing the standard of living for the masses, which rids them of desire for extremism.

OK, so that's a bucket of fail right there.

About your first point, no such thing occurred. There has been no securing of oil in the short- or long-term in Iraq. The oil infrastructure is still kablooey, IIRC Iraq still IMPORTS much of its oil. Even when fully functional, Iraq is a member of OPEC. This is not a group known for its benevolence. If you're going to use oil as a justification for the war, thanks for your honesty. But wouldn't the billions and billions of dollars spent have been put to better use by researching alternatives so we don't have to go to war?

Secondly, if democracy spreads in the Middle East, it won't be from the barrel of a gun. It has to be home grown, something which is now less likely than ever. People there now associate democracy with the US, and not in a good way.

Well he took a gamble, I'll say that. Personally I believe his response was the correct one, but it's still too early to say whether or not it's a net pluss or a net negative. Only time will tell on that one. Not to mention we could have just as easily opened up local areas for oil exploration and attempted to be independant; that's still probably not going to happen, but hey, it was also an option. It wouldn't have had the same positive effect that the Demonstration of Strength and Will had with diplomacy, but it might not have had the same negatives either. It would have also given the Dem's one less thing to whine and biatch about for five years.

That's the working theory; again it's a little too early to tell and what Obama does will be a HUGE Factor. The key is if they are pro-western.

Time will decide this one, it's still too early; personally I think it was a good move, but I'm in the minority with that opinion.
