The conservatives in this country have done a genius thing in regards to the media. It's the same thing creationists have done to scientists. If some sector of society is an expert in a certain field and they disagree with you, just discredit the whole idea of that sector of society. No need to debate on the facts.

People who know more science than you disagree about your scientific views? Attack the very idea of scientific expertise.

People who follow world affairs disagree with your ideas on it? Attack them as hacks for the opposing political side, ignoring the question of who is actually right.

It's a very scary phenomenon.

Palin's own attitudes towards women are heinous. As a female politician she openly called Hillary Clinton a whiner. She charged rape victims for evidence collection as mayor. Her ignorance and her lack of qualification for Vice President, her representation of image over substance and intelligence, seem right now to be a stumbling block for women in politics in America. She has reached the highest level as a candidate since Geraldine Ferraro. That's 24 years since a woman has been a major candidate for the second-highest office in the country, the first time in a lifetime for a lot of people my age, and a woman has never been a candidate for the highest office. And she has made a mockery of women running for high office. This is why she polls so negatively among women.

And she tells us we are somehow deserving of shame or are anti-woman for not supporting her on her narcissistic, anti-intellectual crusade for high office? biatch please.

Sarah Palin isn't fit to lick the sole of Madeleine Albright's shoes.

Also, she met with Kim Jong-Il as Secretary of State. I wonder if Sarah Palin is even aware of what Albright's job was during the Clinton years.

The fact the Albright won't be pulling the lever for the GOP is comforting. I hope she gets crotchety enough to pen a quick "McCain does not support women, so he will not receive my vote" Op-Ed piece that never mentions Palin, and pretty much own the Governor's shiat in about eight paragraphs.

Palin is a political hybrid. She's managed to combine the worst of both church and state into one authoritarian package.

Yes. I am scared to death of the idea that this woman could be a heartbeat away from the presidency. The staggering incompetence, the record for cronyism? The fact that she's incredibly vapid? The faith-trumps-reason schtick?

Damn right I'm scared.

OK. So - I want all of the Fark Independents and Conservatives that have accused Obama of playing the race card to denounce Sarah Palin for playing the gender card. Seems to me you should be just as outraged about this. "Oh, if I don't vote for Obama I'm a racist - they're playing on white guilt". So by that logic, it's "male guilt" if I don't vote for Palin?

Honestly, I am frightened to death of that woman. She believes, literally, that Jesus will return to Earth in her lifetime and fulfill an Armageddon scenario. Now she wants to be a 72 year old man's heartbeat away from the reigns of our "nook-u-lar" arsenal. Thanks but no thanks on the end of days.

this is funny..... you lefties are soooo stupid that you think Palin made this comment?

She was quoting Madeline Albright.

And the whole quote is "There is a special place in hell for women that don't help other women, unless it's women that don't toe the Democratic party line."

I believe "support" instead of "help" is a key distinction in the context of an election.

There's a special place in hell for women who don't support other women who have been raped and impregnated, or who are pregnant from incest, or who for other reasons decide that their choices matter.

Right, Sarah?

It's the US media that have allowed it to be done. The press (and most of the TV journalists) in most democracies reckon their duty to their readers (/viewers) is to report when either side is talking complete cr@p - whatever the overall political leaning of that paper.

In the US, the TV and press just quote both sides without criticism. Then they MIGHT give an editorial comment elsewhere. That's not effective journalism.

This is what bothers me about the McCain and Palin campaign--and it bothered me about the McCain campaign before she hopped on board--is the basic disrespect that it shows for the voters. Their intelligence. Their ability to piece together information. It is a campaign that assumes that people are going to take everything at face value, and then insults people who might want to dig a bit deeper.

If they demonize intelligence or critical thinking, how in the heck are they going to lead? It is telling that they don't want none of that fancy book-learnin' in their White House, nor any of that "fair dinkum-thinkun" stinking up policy.

We've just spent 8 years being insulted nearly daily by the Bush Administration, and in fairness, as a people we deserve to be insulted for allowing him a second term--heck, we deserve the insult for allowing his first--so why invite another 4 years of a leadership that doesn't respect the American people?

I like how the Daily KOS assumes Palin said it deliberately, and not it being a gaffe. To do so requires one to assume Palin is more than a blubbering moron who is lucky that she can dress herself properly in the morning.

Yeah, it's more of her still trying to cram too much info into her head. Like misnaming the general concerning Afganistan. She was close. Same thing with this quote. She'd never heard it before someone told her to say it, probably that day, and you can only learn so much new info at a time. Especially when you look down on and criticize education.

This is the exact same feeling I have about the Democrats and Obama..... the ayers thing..."Oh, he's just some guy in my neighborhood."

Does he really think we're that stupid?

ACORN? How many times do you have to link an organization to voter registration fraud before it's a problem?

Direct quotes from Marx?

I could go on, but it is completely futile. You're so completely brainwashed that you have no recognition of reality left.

See, that's the thing--I don't assume that Palin is an idiot. Watching her debates for the Alaska Governor's seat, you can see that she's NOT an airhead.

She is NOT well versed on issues OUTSIDE Alaska, and that shows. She is very much a creature of the party--I know, she's got the "Maverick" brand name, but that really hasn't been borne out by her policies or her stances. She is a well groomed politician--and by well groomed, I mean she's been put into play, and has support by folks who are glad to have a spokesperson with the ability to sign things into law.

But, despite being beholden to some folks, and interests, she has an agenda of her own--or rather, she is beholden to a few folks with disparate interests. But she has done well enough back in Alaska, and I don't think she's dumb.

I think she's out of her depth. In her comfort zone, she is fairly smart, funny, and while not a gifted orator--which is sort of sad when you think that she was a journalism major who wanted to get into television--she has a certain charm.

What bothers me about it, is that it's based on the idea that to be populist, you have to reject intelligence, and instead put everything into folksy homilies. Will Rogers she ain't--but a lot of the RNC strategy is trying to tie candidates with that sort of folksy wisdom. But, it's disingenuous, because it is calculated, as opposed to being folk wisdom.

Palin is just hoping that you're so charmed by her, that you're not going to notice. And that is the thing that bothers me about her, is the artifice of her.

I won't go as far as to say she's dumb, but she's certainly not obviously smart. She seems frighteningly average in most respects.
