Cause you know, when i'm visiting a city the first thing I do is look up my local campaign office so i can pick up some propaganda.

I'm a fan of the PDA stuff, i've had one for several years, but i think some of these apps are just silly.

As someone in IT for 20+ years, it's shiat like this that I want to see from our President. Sure, only elitists have iPhones today, but it wasn't too long ago that Joe Twelvepack couldn't conceive of a cell phone. High Tech can drive our economy for the next 50 years. Longer if we own the best alternative energy technologies too. I want a President that understands this, or at the least, surrounds himself with people who do.

You have a point here. I think the point is the the Obama campaign is using several "new" forms of media, not just broadcast and print. They're literally redefining the meaning of political engagement.

It's funny how many of the tech-savvy readers here don't know that John McCain was the guy who started using the Internet as an effective campaign tool - while Obama was still dreaming about being a Senator. Mailing lists, web sites, et cetera. They're keeping it up, by fast online updates to their sites and really fast rebuttals to the Obama campaign (they had a big list of Biden gaffes up within an hour of the finish of the debate last night, for example).

Meanwhile, the Obama people are using lots of new tech - badly. Note the comment for the Obama supporter above: a neatokeen iPhone app that 98% of their people will download - and not use.

Yes, this is for a small, rather narrowly-defined group.

But guess what? That group is also very likely to the group who will go out and assist Obama, and want to talk and network with other Obama supporters.

This probably took someone a half a day to make, and if it turns a few hundred votes, it's worth it.

I just downloaded this app..and I think it'll be very useful. The fact that it has all of his positions in one place, nicely formatted for the iphone makes it so much easier for me during encounters with people who say things like "he doesn't have any real ideas" or "he wants socialized medicine." I whip out the phone, pull up the app, and voila! instant info!

What I'd really like to see is a similar app for Congress. Imagine having a thomas app, that keeps track of bills and sessions and who's who in the Congress. Ok, maybe that's only interesting to excruciatingly geeky people like me. But I think this is a great example of how technology can be used in a way to connect citizens with their leaders and each other.

Nice forward thinking there Lou.

As far as "Normal People" not needing a feature rich phone, you're dead wrong. I like the ability to handle my email, set appointments, get directions, take photos, write notes, web surf...

"Normal People" don't need to understand technology, but rather utilize it. Having been in technology a few more years than you, I've seen "Normal People" successfully embrace the changes.

While I can't seem to get an exact figure, it appears there are over ten million iPhones in the USA; that's not a small market. I just downloaded the "free" application (along with probably another million people) and it's pretty cool. I'm impressed the Obama camp is not just talking about technology, but rather using it in a way that wasn't imagined last year.

Best of luck with your limited thinking.

We had a tradition called MadDog Friday once a year in college.... imagine 75 guys and gals with a bottle or two in them in the same place. It was ugly, fun, horrible, awesome, stinky, incredibly sexy, and horrendous all in one. I wouldn't trade it for the world. Haven't even sniffed the stuff since then.

That truly is awful/awesome in equal parts. Cherry brandy is my achilles heel. First drunk. Projectile vomiting of a ham and cheese sandwich.

king_nacho: We always thought by this time people would be pretty versed in using computers, and we wouldn't need tech support to guide an 18 year old adult college student how to save a file to the desktop of a computer. Turns out we were wrong.

Normal People don't understand technology now any more than they did 15 years ago.

15+ years in IT, own my own company. What you describe a problem with the technology, not the people. You don't have to know how an internal combustion works in order to drive a car. The fact that it's not there yet is why you and I are still employed.

I don't want to pile on, but damn- You lack vision for someone in IT.

mason4300: I'm also laughing at all the people commenting about how "tech savvy" Obama is, as if he made it himself. So he has a tech person/team making some shiat for him to try and get the "young" vote, big whoop.

You're right, but it's a reflection of the people around him, the ideas that they're employing, and the creativity they're showing. Obama's campaign is a triumph of using technology to do things differently, and it's why he's going to be the next president. And those people with the good ideas and creativity? They're the ones that will be in the halls of power. Compare that to McCain, who is surrounded by people that haven't had a new idea in years.

That's what Obama gives you- VISION. You can argue the details of the vision, but there's no doubt he has one. And McCain doesn't. Period.

It has nothing to do with money, so your arguing point is invalid. I have to deal with Mac customers all day where I work, and they all pretty much come across as douchebags, or people with too much money and too little brains who like to be "cool" and "in with the crowd." the PDA/Smartphone things isn't going to take off like cell phones did, because they fit a niche. One that gadget and or business people like.

I don't see the normal person having an iPhone or any other PDA, no matter how easy they are to use, they are expensive, both up front, and monthly.

I work in IT at a fairly large university, roughly 30k students. *The PDA/Smartphone thing will take off, just like it has in other countries. Sure, the US has been a little bit behind, but it's really an inevitability. You really think you're going to outguess all the major hardware and software vendors?

The PDA/smartphone thingy WILL take off, because users will have no choice. I (and the other two phone users in my house) have a cameraphone not because we needed the feature, but because that was the "free" phone that was on "special" when we decided to sign up for a plan. The same will happen to the smartphones over time. Most people don't need them and won't use 75% of the features, but darn it, they have a SMARTPHONE.

2008-10-06 10:50:53 AM
chiming in late here but I am going to toss my 2 cents in

I have been working IT for a decade now. I started off as a hardware repair tech and worked my way up to Network Administration. I used to manage 10,000 PCs and 80 or so servers in a strict Windows/Novell environment, and now I managed 30 Unix/OS X servers and 6,000 laptops in a 1:1 high school deployment. Meaning that every high school kid gets their own Macbook.

I tell you, the program is awesome for these kids. We have only deployed them for a year now but there are kids that have already taught them self flash and photo shop and are actually showing the teachers how to do things. It has also jumped up assessment score on average 15% increase in reading and Math. When you put a laptop in front of a high school kid their literacy jumps tons instantly because everything they do requires typing, spelling and reading.

Then we have the every laptop per a child project which will put laptops in every kid's hands. Technology isn't going away any time soon and it can be utilized to make our lives easier and better. We need someone in government that knows this, and that can utilize this so we don't waste our tax dollars on ridiculous projects that go no where.

As for the whole OS X and Windows debate and elitism, after all my time with both platforms and holding certs in both platforms I can say that in my professional opinion, Apple makes a better end user product but Microsoft makes better server side products. Open Directory is really awesome, when it works.

5 years from now every cell phone will be a smart phone and smart phones will be laptops in a cell phone. It is how it progresses. Technology also enables us to be more educated and gives us the wonders of the Internet, and fark.com.
