Indeed smitty... I'm proud you can admit that.

8 years. 8 years to do something, anything about it. What did they do? Nothing.

Well, when these sorts of mortgages hit the market in 2002, pretty much every investment bank in the world told the bush administration that more regulation was needed, or else predatory lending would cause a huge financial crisis.

So, in 2003, W nullified all state predatory lending laws.

Stop that. You just unloaded their concern gun.

I'm a Republican and I'm definitely pissed off at the crap my party has pulled over the last several years. I'm sick of the unregulated financial circle jerks and the unmitigated spending. I think the bailout is a bad thing. If we're going to bail out anyone bail our taxpayers out who trusted in the broke ass system and invested their retirement with these shysters.

A better plan to bail out the country is here

That being said - Pelosi needs to shut the fark up and get shiat done. Now is not the time for pointing fingers, now is the time for working on things together.

Oh, and the Republicans also need to shut the fark up and get shiat done and quit whining. Fix it or get voted out.

I'm leaning towards voting them out.

Yeah, the Republicans were in charge for eight years... but really, it's all the Democrats' fault.

Well, fark, the Democrats must be as powerful as god.

Would you be kind enough to point out some facts backing your statement (as far as inv banks telling bush)? Not being snarky - I just tried to google it and found nothing.

The finger-pointing is sick. There are people in both parties who farked up and contributed to this. They all need to shut the fark up, forget about their stupid "parties" and do something.

And if they can't, they should all be fired because we need to start over if this is the best they can do their jobs. If I sat in my office and didn't do my job because I was too busy fighting with the lady across the hall, who I have to work with, because we're aligned with different groups [and believe me, we are... her weekends are yacht clubs and mine are punk shows]... and she did the same? We'd be fired.

These people are admitting to the public they are failing because they can't get along and they have their little pissing festivals because they're part of a political party.

Democrats, Republicans, and any of them who may be something else... here's some Fark advice: STFU and GBTW.

That's weakness.

This lost them 12 votes. Enough to pass the bill. The fate of our country rests on people who speak and vote based on spite.

Asa Phelps: So, in 2003, W nullified all state predatory lending laws.

FAIL.

Bush proposed a new agency to regulate Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac in 2003. He predicted this was going to happen. But the architects of this fiasco would have nothing to do with it.

New York Times (new window)

Best quote:

"These two entities -- Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac -- are not facing any kind of financial crisis," said Representative Barney Frank of Massachusetts, the ranking Democrat on the Financial Services Committee. "The more people exaggerate these problems, the more pressure there is on these companies, the less we will see in terms of affordable housing."

They created a whole system to lend mortgages to people who couldn't afford them, and then balked at any type of regulation of that system. In case any of you live in a bubble, Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac were deemed insolvent and are now owned by Uncle Sam.

Is Bush partly responsible? Yes, he had veto power and refused to use it for his entire first term, but don't kid yourself, Libs. Your beloved Democrats set up the system that led to the subprime markets, and then blocked any attempts to fix the broken system until it was too late.

And amazingly, the McCain campaign is blaming Obama for the bill's failure. Let's see, 60% of Dems voted for it. 33% of Republicans voted for it. And it's the Democratic leadership's fault? WTF?

How do McCain and his cronies keep a straight face while they're spewing such utter bullshiat?

"John McCain was supposed to deliver 100 House Republican votes. He only delivered 65. Democrats were supposed to deliver 120 House Democratic votes, they delivered 140.

"We're optimistic that Senator McCain will bring House Republicans on board without driving other parties away, resulting in a successful deal for the American taxpayer," said McCain spokeswoman Kimmie Lipscomb. - TIME

"What Senator McCain was able to do was to help bring all of the parties to the table, including the House Republicans, whose votes were needed to pass this" - McCain campaign top aide Steve Schmidt, Meet the Press, September 28, 2009"

I wish everyone would quit blaming each other. It's like watching 90210. Bunch of rich, stuck-up babies that all want their way.

Sounds like Thursday will be a big day and require a suspension of McCain's campaign (and a possible debate).

And really, the house repubs are really blaming Pelosi for the vote? So they do indeed listen to her before voting? She's a shiat sandwich on moldy bread made of rancid fish scales. Why the hell would anyone care what she had to say?

I think people are upset mostly because of this. Yes, everyone recognizes that the GOP dropped the ball and got us here. That being said, the Democrats also share part of the blame too.

Scoring political points is what everyone is pissed at.

baked beans: Here's an interesting link from the New york Times 9-30-99.

Well sort of. He was definitely a lame duck at that point. Newt and his cronies and their Contract with America were in full swing by then. You want to start pointing fingers Phil Gramm and Greenspan are an excellent place to start.

In any event its not really bad mortgages that got us here. Its unbridled speculation and creative financing. If it was just a housing bubble with some bad debt attached then we would not be facing the entire meltdown of the financial system. We'd be in a recession - not drowning in the collapse of free-market capitalism.

I've seen a lot of folks pushing the but Clinton meme on this and I know you guys were counting on Hillary winning the primary - in which case that would have been a relevant point to at least discuss.

Bottom line. McCain was there at the inception of this crises and Obama wasn't. McCain was in a position to prevent all this and he didn't. He promoted it - fully understanding what he was doing. He's a deregulator! The Clintons are way past irrelevent and are rapidly becoming farce. You guys are going to have to let this one go and find a new talking point.

Jeremy Bates: Yeah, the Republicans were in charge for eight years... but really, it's all the Democrats' fault.

I was under the impression that the GOP held the White House and Congress for just two years, and that Democrats have had both houses of Congress in the two years since.

Which they achieved by promising they'd do everything different. And which they've squandered by doing nothing at all and blaming everyone else.

My question is this: If we ("we" being all taxpayers) have to share in Wall Street's loss, will we share the profit when these companies recover?

I'm confused. There are 235 Dems in the House and 200 non-Dems. That's a good 54%...

Wouldn't a simple vote along party lines have passed this?

It strikes me as disingenuous for the Dems to say the Repubs killed it -- while they voted against it, sure.. but if their own party had been behind the bill, it would have passed, no?

Am I missing something?
