Yeah, I'm sure McCain would be flattered to be compared to Nixon and Carter.

McCain so mavericky he's mavericious!

This is really interesting. I think McCain had the right idea, but it's completely farked now because he blew his anti-media load too soon. Bush was able to make it fly, though. I'm trying to figure out if this means people have gotten wise to it, or if it's a workable strategy that McCain has simply bungled.

McCain doesn't "take on the press".

He flails around pathetically, trying to blame the press for his own gaffes. Blaming the media for reporting his stupidities and his own inane comments.

It's not "taking on the press" it's "deflecting valid criticism by blaming the messenger".

And also: Keep on suckin', WSJ staff. Maybe your corporate overlords will let you work for another year.

Well of course he's going to win this election! He's already won this debate, and it hasn't even happened yet!

2008-09-26 7:08:15 PM
Hey Smitty, take a reading comprehension course. When Carter took on the media by boycotting that debate, it was 1980 and he did not win. Agnew took on the media after Nixon had won the election. Both went down in history as crappy presidents. There's your precedent. When a politician tries to game the media, it means they have not one farking other thing to recommend their candidacy.

I just read the entire article. Unsurprisingly, the real point isn't that Nixon and Carter "won", it's that the Press destroyed them afterwards. But I guess if there's truly nothing else for Republicans to grasp onto...

I don't care that he takes on the press. I am glad they are challenged. But they should be allowed to challenge, too. And why does Fox news constantly say the media is destroying this and that? They also say journalism is dead- and yet they are part of the media. Are they suggesting they are dead? That they are part of the problem?

I don't know the longer this campaign goes on the worse it seems to make McCain look. Last year I thought McCain was quiet an honorable man, he seemed to be well informed and seasoned, but then I didn't know much about him. He is starting to make Bush look good, and that is not a good thing. I feel sorry for him in a way as he is not what he used to be. His team is full of people who are as far away from what he is, as it could be possible. If he was elected he would be just like Bush as in, he would be the truck and the real drivers would be someone behind the scenes (see Cheney).

He had credibility but it is lost. When Republicans (remember they stick together no matter how bad someone is (see Mark Foely, Bush etc) are saying he is a trainwreck it really is bad.

I haven't seen so much WIN on so many levels since Super Mario Brothers 3.

+1 for shock value, +1 for nasty image, +1 for point made, and + 1 for being awesome in other threads.

McCain's latest attack on the media is against the New York Times for pointing out that his campaign manager's ties to Freddie and Fannie. McCain is taking on the wider media for trying to ask an elderly presidential candidate's VP questions.

McCain's conduct toward the media is disgraceful.

The Obama campaign is very smart, but in the closing weeks of this long presidential campaign, perhaps Obama needs more "red cell" thinking. Red cell is a term used by the intelligence community to describe wild, out-of-the-box approaches to potential situations.

Because acting like an adult is apparently beyond McCain...

I think the debate tonight will be pretty boring (I know mcCain has already won it), but the really interesting one will be Oct 2 (Biden vs Palin), this is if Palin is allowed to attend. I can see it now.

Reporter: John McCain there has been talk about the readiness of Sarah Palin for the debate.
McCain: No, no, Sarah isn't doing it, Mitt Romney has been kind to stand in for her.
Reporter: You have dropped Sarah Palin as VP?!
McCain: No, no, he will just do the debate she will be on the ticket for the election.

What are the chances of that????

Haha, yea, Nixon and Bush are really people to emulate. Good job, James Taranto.

He seems to be giving the McCain campaign the benefit of the doubt in that this is all part of some grand scheme to throw Obama off the trail.

Lynn Sweet of the Chicago Sun-Times argues that McCain has had great success in catching the Obama campaign unawares flailing about in an uncoordinated, inarticulate manner, making many people wonder what the hell it is they're smoking

FTFH. The idea that Obama was confused and discombobulated by this move is ludicrous. His campaign response to McCain was perfect: a president should be able to multitask, and we can handle a crisis and a debate at the same time. And if you can't, we'll hold a townhall without you.

But we appreciate your concern.

XSLUMLORDX: TFA goes on about how Obama supporters are organizing to stop lies from being advertised and calls it "disturbing".

Yea, I noticed that. Apparently making sure lies about Obama are being rebutted, and hopefully not spread in the first place, is "silencing criticism". Apparently telling the truth is a bad thing....for Obama.

Several problems with this theory:

1. It's obvious that McCain has decided to piss all over the media because he has an idiot for a runningmate and he has to have an excuse to keep her away from the press. If he had started playing the media bias card earlier, before Palin went "full retard," he might have pulled it off more successfully. But now it's completely transparent and cynical.

2. McCain has been ripping the media over allegations that are PROVABLE BY FACT. When the New York Times blew the lid off of Rick Davis's ties to Freddie Mac, that story was indisputable. It was undeniable that McCain's campaign had lied when they said Davis had stopped working for them a year ago. But in the face of hard facts, they STILL tried to play the "media bias" card and went after the NYT's credibility. If you're caught in lie after lie after lie, you undermine your ability to say "Oh, those guys are just out to get me!"
