Given McCain's advanced age, the real question may be whether it would be considered munging.

Thanks to SiteMeter, I caught someone who had found my blog searching for "bhutto musharraf slash fiction."

FTR, this was before Bhutto was assassinated, and I used one blog post to rant about Pakistan and then the concept of slash fiction in general.

TFA: ...Both presidential candidates say they oppose same-sex marriage, although Obama adds that his personal beliefs do not translate into support for banning it...

That's not entirely fair. Obama has given support to civil unions and held reservations about marriage. He has, however, stated that he's open to it and, as mentioned, is opposed to the government banning it on any level.

McCain, by contrast, has given his support to statewide bans, even lying about his home state's stance on the issue.

As a homosexual I have grown used to the fact, indeed, nearly accepted the fact, that I will probably always be a second class citizen so long as I live in the US and both parties pander to some degree to the religious right.

Nobody in the federal government wants to touch same-sex marriage or same-sex unions, just leave it to the states, right? But it's not a state matter. What about my federal tax benefits? What if I want to be with someone who isn't a US citizen (and still live in the US)? What about the highly questionable constitutionality of DOMA? These are things that have to be addressed by the federal government, and until they step in to do so my place in society will be less than heterosexuals.

In the 1960s, interracial marriage was still left largely to the states. Today, that would be an unthinkable position. I won't pretend it's going to happen overnight, but I have no doubt that most of us will see gay marriage on the federal level within our lifetime.

I wish I could have your optimism. Yeah probably in 30 to 50 years time it'll be legal, but what the fark good will it do me then? Also as long as homsexuality is regarded as a choice, it wont get the same level of sympathy from some groups as being black got in the 60s. According to the nutjobs you can't help being black but you can do something about being gay.

Everyone thought that same way in Canada. But people kept fighting and we won. Don't give up or think it will "eventually happen". Over the past few years, visibility and acceptance have really increased. When Ellen is the most popular TV host in America, and she & Portia have a cover and spread in People magazine with their wedding photos... the more visibility there is, the more people even in the heartland are going to think, "Yeah, maybe this isn't such a big deal."

Work/donate/volunteer and most importantly, force the issue of equality at every level of government.

Ever notice that the many of the same people who claim homosexuality is a "choice" and shouldn't be a protected class are often the same people who are proud of their "choice" to accept Jesus and believe they should be protected from religious discrimination?

Depends how old they are. The younger the American, the less bigoted against homosexuals they are. It's pretty much a 1-1 correlation. They've been exposed to it more than older folks, so they're less afraid of it and far more likely to not give a damn if a person's gay or not.

You wouldn't have seen news stories about George Takei's wedding when Star Trek was actually on the air, but times have changed. Equal rights for homosexuals are about 20-30 years behind progress in equal rights for minorities, but it's happening.

Okay, so I know where you are going with this, but we are comparing gay marriage laws to anti-miscegenation laws, so the "choice" element isn't even relevant here. A black person and a white person had to make a choice to get married, they weren't biologically predetermined to do so.

The anti-gay factions are well aware of this, of course, which is why you see this hysterical urgency to get it enshrined in the constitution. They know they don't have much longer.

I do already. Don't get me wrong I'm sure at some point the laws will change (by the time the 52nd century rolls around certainly) but I doubt I'll see it at any point in my lifetime where it will matter to me as a person. I do work to gain visibility and equality for it as much as I can here in Utah, but even among Dems here the idea of gay people even openly existing in the state is sort of scary. For Utah, I'll be happy when I can't lose my job or my apartment because I'm gay. Everything else is just a pipe dream to me.

Oh and all my bitterness comes from living in Utah. Can't really afford to transfer schools and move though, sadly.

Polyhazard:

I definitely notice this, being from Utah. Apparently though "choosing" to be gay is more akin to choosing to snort coke than choosing to love Jesus. At least thats the argument as I've heard.

I think it will be sooner rather than later, honestly. The shift in public opinion on the entire subject has been so dramatic in the last ten years that it's not even the same issue from a political or even social standpoint.

Nothing happens overnight, but relatively speaking in comparison to the similar racial bias issues in the U.S. the issue of gay marriage really is changing that fast.

I've got to be honest with you, I previously vehemently opposed gay marriage until I sat down and really thought about it. You might not believe it, but discussing things on the Politics Tab of Fark did shed some light on how silly I was being.

I'm not going to say that I think gay people are normal, because I really do think that it's strange. However, there are a lot of strange people out there(every one of us is strange in some way), so why the hell not? Gays deserve to be happy just as much as anyone else, regardless of how little I understand them.

I've come to think that maybe gays are like U2 fans: completely out of step with reality as I see it, but harmless and entitled to be left the hell alone about what they want to do.

Of course, everyone probably thinks I'm an asshole for this post, but at least I'm honest
