Yes it's the norm now. It's just a dog after all- an object with legs and a brain. It should be disposed of immediately because it has the potential to harm the officer(s), and limit their ability to perform their job. If cats happen to scratch a SWAT member during a raid of some sort, they'll be made targets as well.

I'm not a dog person per se, but they'll have to shoot me if they shot a dog in my presence, because I'd forget my nonviolent tendencies and try to cause some bodily harm to the police officer(s).

Children can not give permission and the children were trying to put the dog in a safe position for the police and the dog. The dog being in the same room the owner is taking a shower, the dog was just doing what a good dog should do if stranger busts into the room.

This is just gross misconduct. The dog was not going to kill or seriously injure the officers and they knew it. This was handled in the worst possible way. I'd have their badges. If it were me and my dog, I would sue the officers, and the city for everything I could, make the city run a full page apology in the newspaper, as well as insist on charges being filed against the officers.

nijika: Is dog shooting the new cop hotness? When did this begin? Is it a post-Iraq thing?

There has been a subtle sea-change in police procedures. Increasingly, they are designed to provide for the maximum safety of the officers - not the safety of the lives and property of the public they are supposedly defending. This moves me to ask - what do we need them for? I'm a big guy. I can fight pretty good, and have a closet full of guns. If I have trouble, what's the point in my calling out some pussy whose main priority is to protect himself?
Being a cop is already a fairly safe job - it's not even in the top twenty of dangerous professions. If you aren't willing to subordinate your own safety to that of those you have sworn to protect, you need to go into accountancy or some similar profession.
Frankly, any of you Farkers who are cops - if your "procedure" involves mainly "keeping our officers safe" - if there's trouble, just stay away. I don't have any use for you, and you will only get in my way.
