And the far right says "vote for us or terrorists will murder your children."

Just depends on which end you think is more likely.

Raiden333: And the far right says "vote for us or terrorists will murder your children."

Actually, that's just the right. The far right are the ones screaming that black helicopters are going to be dropping UN soldiers into our backyards and sending us all to those secret prisons.

2008-08-27 12:49:16 PM
You're right. No one wants health care or workers' rights or legalized pot or and end to the war in Iraq. Those things are INCREDIBLY UNPOPULAR.

The far left is so terrible an entity that it just had to be invented.

Hold on a sec... there's a "far left" in US politics?

Awesome!

When's the convention for the Anarcho-Syndicalist Union of Autonomous Collectives?

See you on the barricades!

The "far left" is busy marching in the streets in Denver, banging bongo drums and shouting about how they hate the Democrats as much as they hate the GOP, shouting about corporate media, shouting about "US out of Palestine/Afghanistan/Iraq/NATO/Everywhere", shouting about how Bush and Cheney plotted 9/11 on their own, and generally being loud but pointless. Oh yeah...and they have giant puppets.

The "moderate left" are all wearing suits and ties and they're actually inside the convention discussing the economy and how to best end the war in Iraq without the nation becoming a bloodbath and how to convince NATO allies to increase their commitments to Afghanistan, about how to solve the current dependency on foreign oil and how to keep American jobs in America.

If you're unable to tell the difference between those two, then perhaps it's because you're so "far right" that you can no longer discern what it is you're looking at.

A recent study revealed that around 34% of Albertans (Canadian province) smoke weed on a semi-regular basis. When a third of the population is breaking the law it might be time to think about revising that law.

The problem the left has with America

A lot of people wonder what the negativity toward America that comes from the left is derived from. People remember Chomsky's infamous apologia for Pol Pot and the Khmer Rouge after the Vietnam war, people hear Zinn's endless tirades about America's "genocidal imperialism," people hear the anti-American pronouncements coming from the San Francisco Board of Supervisors, people will never forget Ward Churchill saying the 9/11 victims deserved what they got, people remember Ramsey Clark and Lynn Stewart defending America's worst enemies, people remember Sean Penn and Jane Fonda giving aid and comfort to our enemies during times of war and of course all the treachery coming from the left during the Cold War, and they wonder - what does the left have against this country?

Obviously, the major point of contention between right and left stems from the classic argument between more continental European collectivist (Hegelian) values and the more British/American values of individualism, liberty and personal responsibility.

But taking that realization a step further - by putting it in the context of history - you begin to be able to see things from the left's perspective.

Looking around today, what you find is British/American modes of economy and governance dominating the world. More and more developing countries are opening up their economies to foreign investment and competition and it's no longer a question whether free markets and democracy have truly triumphed over collective authoritarian models - people are just doing it.

The world is following America's example, and America does and has always represented the height of individualist, liberal (in the classic sense) way of life, and it is why America is the most influential, and powerful nation in the world.

America reminds the left, each and every day, of the triumph of individual liberty over collective authority.

Liberalism is extremely harmful in a revolutionary collective. It is a corrosive which eats away unity, undermines cohesion, causes apathy and creates dissension. It robs the revolutionary ranks of compact organization and strict discipline, prevents policies from being carried through and alienates the Party organizations from the masses which the Party leads. It is an extremely bad tendency.

Let's play the Fark headline mad-lib game.

Does the headline tell us anything? No. So lets replace all left wing references with right wing references:

"The far-right has failed so comprehensively to make the case for its vision that the only thing left to do is to brazenly assert the world will literally collapse unless we implement this otherwise indefensible vision"

Did that tell us anything different? No. It's just stupid, idiotic, partisan fodder that can be copied and pasted until the end of time, and will always be grasped at as an epiphany of political insight by a stupid few.

I don't really remember much of that and I doubt most Americans do. The most common reaction is probably going to be "who?"

As a pretty liberal guy, I don't really feel any need to pay particular attention to Ward Churchill et. al., nor do I think I need to defend them.

Also, your rant kinda sounds a bit intellectual. Elitist.

I saw Hillary's speech last night, and I re-read it this morning. Allow me to summarize: Everything good in life comes from Democrats. The last 8 years, America has become a pathetic wasteland, ruled by demons who want to bleed the common man for their own ambitions. The only way we'll ever be humans again is to put a democrat in the white house - even if there's still no way you can elect me or my husband.

I don't know. Maybe she's right.

These are things they like to promise, but really can't make due on. Just like in school when they'd say, "recess all day! pizza for all school lunch days! no more math!'

I mean, Pelosi and the congress have done so well on all their plans. NOT.

Friend, I don't know where in the East Bay you are, but I will buy you a beer.

re: your last sentence: America should serve as a reminder to left of both the the triumph of individual liberty over collective authority AND the miserable failings of the liberal ideology, but the left consistently ignores these things, because it's very hard to refute all that, and much easier to listen to Al Franken, call Bush a moron, buy a Prius, and feel like they've contributed something.

To clarify, one can argue the US backed the government of Lon Nol

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lon_Nol

that preceded the Khmer Rouge. The US most certainly didn't support the Khmer Rouge. Making that assertion is like saying the US supported the ayatollah in Iran. If anything, China supported the Khmer Rouge.
