Yes ... except he began the video bit by saying "Hello from Kansas City", before saying St. Louis, and then corrects himself to his daughter 30 seconds later.

Of course this is obviously equally as bad as a "man of the people" not knowing how many properties he owns, or the man with "more foreign policy experience" confusing Sunni and Shia, or the man who is trying to pander to the feminists calling his wife a coont.

And Obama DID say there were 57 states, too, so they are clearly equally confused about the important issues that America faces.

2008-08-26 10:15:21 AM
Because that's... totally just as bad.

If I were flying all around the country, staying in a different city every day for the past year, I'd probably get a bit confused too now and then.

I really wanted Obama to say, "Where am I? I'm in farking Missouri, kid! This place farking sucks!"

That's okay, it's not a big college town, anyway.

Yeah subby, these two things are in no way comparable. Thanks for playing.

With that he clearly meant 57 primary contests, but that hasn't stopped the right from continuing to pretend that Obama doesn't know how many states we have.

Yeah and If I married a wife that had inherited a beer empire along numerous properties and investments I probably wouldn't know how many homes were included.

On the other hand, if my wife owned a property holding company that managed a handful of rentals, I probably wouldn't know exactly how many houses were involved either.

I love the way the media sets folks up like this. If it were me (and I am FAR from rich) they'd probably ask me exactly how many shares my bank has in some obscure European mutual fund. I've glanced at my bank's prospectus a couple of times when they sent it along with the checking statement, but I couldn't tell you at gunpoint what all their investments are.

Does that make me an idiot?

Yes, it makes you an idiot and I wouldn't want you running my country, either. I would never place myself in a position where, if my marriage were to fail, I didn't have a clear picture of our joint finances. That's just lazy and irresponsible.

All of them have meade this mistake more than once. It still pisses the audience off though

At least McCain has the excuse of being senile. Obama doesnt have an excuse ... DOYA?!

Theaetetus: ... except that that's not what we're talking about, and you know it. The McCains own several homes that they don't rent out, that are just for their personal use.

According to this (new window), they have two homes (which, by the way, is true of almost everyone in Congress -- one in DC, one in their home district).

And that's not what he was asked. He was asked how many he owns, not how many he uses.

I agree that it would be easy to forget what city you're in during a campaign; this business with Obama is amusing only because he's made such a big deal about McCain's home gaffe.

But let's not pretend that was more than it was -- a reporter playing gotcha on a meaningless issue.

2008-08-26 10:32:41 AM
Yeah, but unless he woke up pantless in a bus depot, still drunk/high and had a brand new tattoo "Al" on his ass, I don't see an issue ...

Actually if you read the snopes comments on this they say that he first said 50, paused, and then said 57. The way they explained it was that he was thinking about 50, then he paused and said 57 instead of what he meant to say, being 47. Which was actually the correct answer.

2008-08-26 10:33:12 AM
When Obama made a mistake, he corrected it right away without anyone telling him.

McCain would have had his staff get back to us on the name of the city he was in.

A mutual fund and the number of houses you own are two entirely different things.

I can expect you to know the latter but not the former. So yes, it would make you an idiot.

Geez, people. I think the lesson here is when the stakes are high and dozens of cameras are on you, you are still human and still make mistakes. Obama's said some dumb things (new window) and so has McCain. Quit quibbling over insignificant shiat.

I'm pretty confident in saying that your candidate is a blithering idiot that doesn't even know [insert quote taken entirely out of context]. This Missouri mix up on top of his 57 state gaffe shows that this immigrant from Kenya just isn't American enough to be president. When McCain f*cks up geography, its foreign lands like Czechoslovakia and Iran.

I can see the ad now:

"Obama says he loves this country. He says he's not a registered muslim. He says he wants to help working class families.

But when asked a simple question about what city he was in, why did he answer incorrectly? Was he intentionally misleading the American people, or is he just not familiar with America in general?

I'm John McCain and I approved this message
"

I get it now!
See, now McCain's side will put out an ad saying that Obama's a dirty beatnik. Hell, he's liberal, ain't he?

Then Obama's campaign will accuse McCain's of being elitist. After all, he owns a ton of houses, of which some are considered residences.

Then McCain will fire back with the whole "I'm a man of the people! I can even play guitar! Watch!" And he'll do a terrible rendition of Free Bird.

Then Obama will accuse him of being a dirty beatnik, and we'll have created the world's first perpetual motion device and energy will be free and we'll all live happily ever after.

There are 57 Islamic States.

I guess if McCain had done it people would say he's going senile and doesn't even know where he is anymore.

Really all it means is obama has been traveling constantly. I can see the confusion though, KC and StL are both pretty generic US metropolitan areas.
