I miss the good 'ol days when getting arrested at a protest meant a few hours at the police station and a fine.

On a positive note, a guy whom attends some politcal meetings that I attend goes to the conventions and has been arrested on many occasions. He makes the court date and sets precedent protecting the first amendment.

Let's hope there are many people that can do the same.

Dang, I was hoping to just get this treatment at the GOP convention.

Who the hell protests the DNC? I mean, besides the obvious anti-abortion/gay rights groups?

If you're protesting there, be prepared to be assaulted by Zubaz-wearing thugs, who will pummel you with slap-bracelets that they pull out of their fanny packs.

Nah, not really. They'll just beat the crap out of you and tase you a bunch of times.

Yay convention police states!

BobtheFascist: Who the hell protests the DNC? I mean, besides the obvious anti-abortion/gay rights groups?

Paid operatives.

No, I'm not a tinfoil-wearing nutcase. The people you are going to see agitating in front of the DNC are going to be paid to distract the media from what's going on inside.

The thing about conspiracy theories is...they're not very effective unless they're plausible. And yes, I'm saying your theory is VERY plausible.

I kind of want to go now, if only so I can shout "Ow! This is the second gayest beatdown by Republicans I've ever experienced!"

Make sure you dress as a furry, they dig that in St. Paul.

/I'm just gonna make a nice "Fark inside joke" sign and carry it.
//UFIA should make an appearance somewhere on said sign.

If I lived near either convention, I would show up by myself with the biggest placard of the Wharrgarbl Dog I could find, and refuse to explain it or talk to anyone the whole time.

I'm never gonna live that down, am I? And I think this thread proves that even Fark has a handful of people who are waaaaaaaaay worse than me in that respect.

Gitmo on the Platte? That's not so much fun. Abu Ghraib, now there's a free speech zone.

This idea has merit.

I am thinking of getting a "Pancakes" shirt and tying an onion on my belt for good measure.

/I KNOW the "Pancakes" meme is overdone, but I'd just like to see other's reactions.

I'd go for the wraparound/slingshot maneuver. Go to the convention with a V for Vendetta mask, AND a t-shirt that says "I AM A GIANT DOUCHEBAG."

No, that wasn't a jab at you. I meant more like...

Comic book purist, loved V for Vendetta when it was just a book and not even a potential for massive suck in the Wachwoskis' eyes. The movie came out great (at least, quite watchable and not a cinematic adaptation abortion like League of Extraordinary Gentleman), but unfortunately it's produced this sort of 4chan/Anon wave of people who put on the masks and think they're saying something politically deep or relevant when protesting. So even though I've wanted my own V mask since I first read the damn thing, now it just feels cliched and stupid.

Secondary Fark party in St. Paul during the GOP convention?

Allow me to repeat my suggestion from earlier this year: The politicians should be in a cage with barbed wire and armed guards to make sure they can't escape. The citizens should be allowed to roam free.

It should also be legal to ram a VIP motorcade if it runs a red light.

They could market it as some tough love spa. Visitors will pay top dollar to stay there.

Uh, 4chan doesn't use the mask for a liberal political boost. It uses it because A. it retains anonymity and b. it's an easy meme reference. The mask is Epic Fail Guy's mask. That's like one of the top three figures of /b/. The other two being Anonymous (man in a suit with a greened out face) and pedobear.

Much more spacious than the camps built for the Cubans in Panama. Oh, right, these cells are for OUR citizens.

Denver police build "Gitmo on the Platte": A warehouse full of cages and barbed wire to house arrested protesters at the Democratic Convention

I did not know that Republicans were ever arrested. Other than for toilet breaks.

2008-08-13 5:14:12 PM
This is actually really scary. I remember like two years all the conspiracy websites talking about mass arrests and the government using warehouses for them.

It sucks when people are right.

2008-08-13 5:15:21 PM
The police should be cautious ... apparently being a Lib these days will get you shot.

2008-08-13 5:15:30 PM

veedeevadeevoodee: the DNC constructs a "Free Speech Zone" every election year (this one circa 2004 in Boston)

Orly? The city governments of Boston and Denver and their police force and sherrifs departments are run by the DNC? And does the RNC give out chocolates and put flower leis on all of their protesters, or is it as I suspect pretty much the same: what the city wants?

2008-08-13 5:15:31 PM
This sickens me.

2008-08-13 5:15:38 PM
You know, for everyone upset at this, I have a simple, heartfelt and thoughtful suggestion for you: If you're going to the DNC Convention, don't farking do anything illegal!!!1!1! Christ, I would've thought it would be common sense instead of jumping to the conclusion of zomg internment campzz.

2008-08-13 5:15:46 PM
...and the home of the brave.

/play ball!

2008-08-13 5:16:11 PM
And this is my United States of Whatever.

2008-08-13 5:16:45 PM
If farkers could organize the potential for hilarity to ensue would be enormous. If we descended on the protesters of one or both conventions handing out signs reading "UFIA" and telling people it stood for the United Freedom something something, we could get CNN and Fox to take a million photos of the UFIA mass and broadcast them worldwide. Only after the United Freedom something something's leaders were interviewed live on national TV would the world learn the real meaning of the UFIA.

2008-08-13 5:17:21 PM
Perhaps some people will see what the Democratic Party is all about.

2008-08-13 5:17:21 PM
I'm guessing it will be the:
-Anti abortion people
-the 'Impeach Bush Now' crowd
-Anti war
-hippies (they protest anything)
-NORML
-anarchists (they've already said they are coming)
-bored liberal arts college students

I bet the guards are already drawing straws on who has to go guard them. Can you imagine having hundreds (or thousands) of prisoners who would never shut up? "You have the right to remain silent. Use it"

2008-08-13 5:17:22 PM
The idea of dressing up as a "Furry" carrying a "UFIA" sign is strangely arousing... now if said "Furry" was also wearing a "Warriors" t-shirt while dressed up as a fark squirrle... I think my head would asplode!

That's because most Republican protesters stay within the law. Your anarchists who hail from the left, however...

I have zero sympathy for someone who gets arrested for breaking the law. Herd them like cattle in your warehouse all you like...
