Yeah, those dirty cheating Russians and all that doping. I'll be watching clean American athletes like Dara Torres, who surely is swimming at the highest level she ever has at age 41 solely through diet and exercise.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but every olympics, every swim meet, all the articles I've read, despite not being really involved with the sport, they all tend to go on and on about how swimming is about body shape and technique over raw strength. Since it's hugely a function of water flow, I can understand that argument.

If she was always good, she's maintained her physique, and her technique has improved due to experience, wouldn't you expect her to be better?

I don't think that would apply to all sports, but swimming seems to be almost as much about the perfection of your movements as it is about physical power.

Torres' spends an insane amount of money on her training. Real sports did some piece on her a while back. She has personal trainers for every part of her day + personal masseuses, etc. And fwiw, it's all pretty transparent. She voluntarily submits to urine and blood tests and has never tested positive for anything.
