holy shiat. what a way to go.

2008-07-25 6:57:36 PM
Inadequate training.
Inadequate or unenforced safety procedures.
Inadequate safeguards to prevent accident.
Lack of foresight.
Young, unsupervised summer workers.

Same reason there's a 22 year old crane operator dead in Richmond, BC earlier this year.

OMFG. The very thought of this is making my toes curl.

Somewhere there is a dumptruck driver that is going to have some doozy nightmares tonight.

This just made my list of top ways I do not want to die.

Also, is that SOP to have 15 year olds working on those sorts of jobs there?

2008-07-25 7:01:55 PM
Oh. My. God. That really seriously sucks.

2008-07-25 7:03:03 PM
15 Years old and working on a construction site - the law here is 16 for this work.

Tragic "accident" that should have been prevented with proper safety - wow bad bad bad way to die

that's hot

I had a lot of friends in high school who took summer jobs with the city shovelling "hot patch".

That was back in the early 1980s, but I expect it's still the same.

Let's hope it knocked him out as it fell on him. Workplace health and safety is going to crucify someone over this.

I only need to see the first half second of that clip to not watch any more of it.

Terrible way to go...

Not the way I want to go.

Ugh, that really is horrific.

They should have listened to a fellow Canadian when she warned about paving paradise to put up a parking lot.

Horrible. Poor kid. :(

Yep... that definately edges out being raped to death by a bull.

/don't even ask

It was worse for the people who had to scrape me off the pavement and then watch me flatline. I don't remember a damned thing.

Fortunately, neither does this poor kid :(

That's up there with lava... I think it's worse because it's slower.

No, that is the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board of Ontario, Canada.

Imagine OSHA doing these commercials.

As a young child I used to have nightmares of being squashed by a huge steamroller, so I'm not getting a kick out this

2008-07-26 12:19:51 AM
I really feel bad for the kid. I had plenty of friends growing up though high school that would work job sites for pot money. So I'm not so surprised.

Like sands through the flipping hourglass, so is the asphalt of our lives.

I'm a speedbump!

2008-07-26 12:38:17 AM
Ok amateur FARK coroners what was the cause of death?

1. suffocation
2. inhaling the fumes of the asphalt
3. being cooked alive by the heat
4. overwhelming pain
5. shock

/Bonus points if you can nail down a timeline

A few years back, some dude fell into the huge rock grinder at a quarry in Michigan. Word is that they used a mop to clean it up.

I always thought DEATH BY WEED WACKER!!! would suck the most in "freak household and workplace accidents" department. Followed closely by DEATH BY BELTSANDER!!!!. I'm proud to announce the new #1 is what I have just read in the article.

Hate to ask, but morbid curiosity is getting the better of me: is there a compiled list somewhere, preferably with pics?

That just SCREAMS Website!

/probably been done.

In The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time there are these mummy-like monsters who freeze time, scream horrifically, jump on your back and hump you to death.

That scream is going through my head after RTFA.

2008-07-26 12:44:04 AM
Falling into a vat of sulfuric acid would probably be worse although I wouldn't want to find out either way.

2008-07-26 12:44:33 AM
That would be one farking horrible way to die.

The only question is would you smother before you burned to death?

Jesus H. Christ.

No. If you RTFA, it says "Richard Hill, who lives less than 100 metres from the accident scene, heard the boy screaming and ran over."

It wouldn't be quite hot enough to burn you enough to knock you out. Just enough to peel off your skin. Most likely he died of asphyxiation or shock.

Ontario did a fantastic series of commercials on workplace safety. I got shudders from this one:

It didn't, he was found "screaming".

darkyn: Let's hope it knocked him out as it fell on him. Workplace health and safety is going to crucify someone over this.

Unfortunately, according to TFA, the only way they even knew he was there was because they heard him screaming. So he was alive for a while, at least.

Chilling.

This will pave the way for tougher child labor laws...
