Quick! Call the Enterprise... there's likely a science vessel trapped in the matter stream!

the event does make astronomers wonder whether there are other discoveries going unnoticed.

Um, I don't think they can be called discoveries until they are actually noticed.

/I thought I noticed something brighter in the X-Ray spectrum late last year.

I saw it. I was just waiting to see how long it took the rest of you to catch on.

If nobody noticed it, how did it make the news?

Well, c'mon, let's be fair here...stars ARE pretty frickin' far away, no?

Anyone who went outside that night and looked towards the constellation of Puppis would have seen it, Saxton says.

So there.

"Well, our object collison budget's a million dollars. That allows us to track about 3% of the sky, and beg'n your pardon sir, but it's a big-ass sky. "

What kenryoku_one said. There's a lot of universe out there, and it may just be that people were busy studying other stuff.

Besides, this is just a nova. Yawn. All the cool kids are catching a buzz off supernova hunting, these days.

Here's one of those a team I work with found a couple days ago (on my birthday, too - what a nice present!):

Puppis (pronounced /ˈpʌpɪs/, Latin: poop deck) is a southern constellation. It is the largest of the four parts into which Argo Navis was split.

Like anything good ever came out of The View after Lisa Ling left. Seriously, co-hosting that show is just about the worst possible career move in the entertainment industry.
