(Yahoo)   And you thought you had a bad Monday: Royals pitcher Jimmy Gobble stuffs the strike zone but gets carved up for 10 runs by Detroit hitters, who had already mashed their way to seven-run lead, so it's all gravy. Turkey   (sports.yahoo.com) divider line

More interesting, Tony Pena Jr. (a SS) pitched a 1-2-3 ninth inning for KC.

At least Cabrera is finally producing. And Verlander seems to be pitching like it's 2006 again.

They have a chance to turn this around. 5.5 games out of first with a lot of time left, and the Sox slowing down a bit. Still have to get past Minnesota, but they don't play the Twins very well.

///Kind of sad though, Gobble was once as big a prospect as Greinke

Pena sucks sucks sucks sucks sucks sucks sucks as a hitter

but he was surprisingly good as a pitcher, throwing a fastball at 90mph, and turning in the best pitching performance of the game.

Granted, Pudge was probably showing some mercy by not trying to crush 75mph Pena curveballs into the seats.

Hey, if it were plausible, i'd love for Pena to split his time between relief pitching, and defensive replacement work. Especially if that means that he doesn't have to hit the ball.

Thank the Lord that Hillman didn't let Jose Guillen pitch.

Notable that it is this game, the first win for Detroit in 8 tries this year over KC that Sheffield gets 3 RBI's and passes Brett for 29th all time. And, that it happens in the most runs the Tigers have ever scored against the Royals. Their day. Too bad for Gobble. Enough that he's from Tennessee and couldn't hack college. Looks like his tenure is winding to a close. Hope he's used a good accountant.

OK, this should finally answer the question "Is Jimmy Gobble the worst pitcher in the Major Leagues", right? I mean, you really have to suck out loud to give up 10 runs in the 8th to a team with a 9 run lead.

What's really funny is that the local sports honks around here and KC are talking about Gobble as trade bait. Yeah, there are a lot of teams in a pennant race looking for a relief pitcher who's good for giving up shiats and 2 runs an inning.

RobbieFal: Pena sucks sucks sucks sucks sucks sucks sucks as a hitter

You know on the FSN broadcasts they keep comparing Pena to Frank White's first couple of years, where he hit in the low .220's or whatever, and I just have to laugh. I can't say I was aware of baseball in Frank's first two years but I can't imagine he looked quite as helpless up there as Pena does. I mean the kid swings at breaking stuff like you or I would: just has no clue where the ball is going.

Probably not as much as Royals first base coach Rusty Kuntz.

Hopefully both can be treated with some Penicillin and a couple weeks off.
