He said he coined the phrase 2 years before his sports telecast in 1978. I could almost swear that I'd heard it before that.

I thought that was a Yogi Berra nugget.

Hmmmph.

Goodnight, ink-stained wretchy man!

Meanwhile, A lot of people will start to celebrate until they re-read the article and see it's Dan Cook who died.

Someone should throw that phrase under a bus that's jumping the shark.

What? With Comedy gold like this (new window), I don't see how people could celebrate his death.

Not big enough. Wondering why my local news in Austin link I submitted wasn't green'd but a Detroit article was. Neat!

Rest easy, caller of sports.

I live in Los Angeles. Right after the Northridge quake in '94 I went for ride on my bike around the neighborhood, just to survey the damage. There was one particular apt. bldg. that was just leveled. A 3-story affair with the parking lot under the bldg. All you could see after the quake was crushed cars under the weight of the bldg.

On the side of the bldg. someone had spray-painted "The fat lady has sung." Even under the circumstances of the time, that made me giggle.

/just thought I'd share

Grew up watching Dan Cook on KENS. He was a great throwback to the sports reporters of old (although more in his writing than they let him get away with on TV).

He regularly threw out metaphors and allusions such as the "fat lady" quote. That's just the one that stuck.

That phrase is only 30 years old??? I thought that was from WAY earlier, probably the 1920s. interesting.

that's exactly what I came here to say. That makes the saying 100 times better, to me

Dick Motta most famously coined the phrase during the 1977-78 NBA finals when the Washington Bullets Wizards fell behind 3 games to 2 against the Seattle Oklahoma City Super Sonics.
