(AP)   Another tear-jerking, heart-wrenching account of how the economy is forcing people to make coffee at home instead of going to Starbucks and drop expensive gym memberships in lieu of jogging for free. The horror, the horror   (ap.google.com) divider line

That's just so terrible.

My job gives me all the free coffee I can drink. And I bike to work.

I guess I'm saving...about $225 a month or so.

That's a lot of PBR

Next thing you know, people will stop buying houses that they can't even remotely afford.

I fully expect to see Congress pass a law that gives everyone in foreclosure a free house the day before I close on one.

My work has a free gym, and I get free coffee from my mom's work next door...

It's crappy gas station coffee, but still.

2008-06-22 5:12:36 PM
On the one hand, I agree, it's silly what people pay for coffee (don't even get me started about bottled water), on the other hand, I'd be happier if people had the money to blow on stupid crap like that.

It's not quite as side-splittingly funny as you seem to think, soontobesellingapplesmitter.

Once people start doing things for themselves and not paying others to do them, our economy goes straight to third-world level.

Congress isn't in the business of protecting Americans. Only American businesses who contribute to their campaigns. The lenders will be protected.

And it's attitudes like this that keep this economy from really taking off. I suppose next you're going to suggest paying off your credit card bill in full every month, Mr. Negative...

FTA: Workers' wages, meanwhile, dropped for the seventh consecutive month.

This is a lot more important than the "giving up lattes." Wages are going DOWN, not up, and inflation is bad. I vote we start eating CEOs.. All in favor, raise your hand.

Which is why I don't actually drink it at Starbucks. I go to a better expensive coffee shop...

FTFA A $1.50 bottle of soda for each weekday of the year, for example, would add up to about $390. Now at $2 in some parts of the country, the habit comes with an annual price tag of $520. Over five years, that's $2,600

And over 1,000 years you could save more than half a million dollars!

Where did I say that? He compared the gym, a place you typically go to build muscle mass through lifting weights, to "jogging for free", which is medium-intensity cardio which builds very little muscle mass. That's the comparison. Don't victimize me. T.T

/Paul Anderson disapproves of your expensive weight shenanigans

I'm no meathead, but implying that jogging is a substitute for the gym is pretty stupid.

ElwoodPDowd: /hates when they show small costs over a long period of time for impact.

Um ... why? How else are you supposed to manage your money except by understanding your cash flow over time?

There are people I work with who easily spend $5 a day on coffee and vending machine crap, and if they stepped back and looked past the next 8 hours they'd there are a multitude of things they could do with that kind of money.

Running on a treadmill isn't as good as ACTUAL running. You move NONE of your mass forward. You're just moving your legs ( Ialmost wrote kegs there. Funny, that)

Not saying you're not exercising, but you get a better workout when you mve your position in the world.

At 30 or so pounds of good meat per person (trust me on this one), the two of you will need to eat about 1 CEO per month (12 per year, 120 per decade). You'll go through the whole Fortune 100 list before the end of the Obama Administration, and that includes Buffett, Murdoch, and Ballmer - blech.

You'd be better off eating the poor. They're more numerous, so you'd get a better selection, and tend to be softer and flabbier, for easier chewing.

First, they came for the Starbucks workers, but I didn't care. Then all the gyms closed down and the personal trainers went on unemployment. Then, people stopped getting haircuts and the salons all went under.

Almost no one noticed, of course, the disappearance of the pool cleaning boys, home delivery of pizza (always a favorite occupation of the suddenly employed - now gone!).

The want-ads are full of jobs: prison guard, code enforcement worker, part-timer pothole fixer.

There was, however, one occupation that seemed to never dry up, never go out of business - a bit impacted by the number of new and eager workers, but still...

But but if your not driving around in your H2 with a Starbucks in your hand in between leaving the gym, going to the mall and taking your kids to Chuck E Cheeze you must be poor or failing at your career!

Our nightly news just had a segment about more "pasta and potatoes" being purchased, similar to what Americans did during the Great Depression. I swear to gawd.
