(BBC)   Britain's socialized medical system is about to go belly-up because all the old folks there are going insane. No word on a solution, although doctors seem to be renting "Soylent Green" a lot for some reason   (news.bbc.co.uk) divider line

Subby needed to read the article a little closer. NHS is not about to go bankrupt, a group of eleven specialists in Alzheimer's Disease are predicting that it will if they are not given more money to research the disease they specialize in. Apparently their arguement is that demented old people cost more to care for than sane old people.

It is a chicken little scam for more research cash.

Fools! If they had simply adopted the American health care system, they wouldn't have this problem of caring for elderly people.

Nobody would live that long.

possibly a scam, but they are right that prevention is cheaper in general when it comes to health.

"Socialized Medicine"? is a commie scare word. Universal healthcare iis the best system there is, however, the United States is the only industrialized nation that does not guarantee access to health care as a right of citizenship. 28 industrialized nations have single payer universal health care systems, while 1 (Germany) has a multipayer universal health care system.

The NHS still spends less per capita than the US government, except they actually provide health care. It's like taxing the people, and then actually doing something responsibile with the money.

Something I learned a week or two ago: the NHS gives people penis pills for free (assuming you've paid your taxes, that is).

Rebecca Wood, the chief executive of the Alzheimer's Research Trust, said that a quarter of the Department of Health's £700m research and development money was spent on cancer research, more than six times the figure received by dementia researchers.

Here's where they start spending more money to fight the ailments that cost them the most instead of the ones that kill people.

good thing dementia is the only condition elderly people can suffer from, and that the US doesn't have an increasingly elderly-skewed population or a candidate who wants to "universalize" medicine...

Actually the cheapest approach is to ignore the problem and then deny coverage to the elderly, even if they take you to court they'll be dead soon, so just drag it out. If you're lucky the geezers will die of the stress, and their heirs will just drop the case out of sheer exhaustion.

Yeah but unfortunately they do and some states like mine have already thrown Alzheimers patients out on the street from nursing homes because they couldn't afford to pay for their care. Our system is already broke.

Somehow I suspect that the scope of dementia in the UK is exacerbated by their alcohol consumption. Virtually every Brit I've ever met was a lush.

I was always told by the Global Warming researchers that researchers never fudge or stretch data to show findings that would support the need for more research monies, like that Global Warming is real, we're farked, and we'd better start cutting checks to solve these sorts of problems.

Right...Personally, I'd rather suffer and die of cancer than turn into a drooling mental retard (and then die). Or do you think Alzheimer's is no different than ED?

I don't want to touch global warming, but you do realize that all grant proposals are extensively peer-reviewed and will not be funded unless good data exists? In addition, if you are found to be fudging data (and auditing of data does occur), your scientific career is ostensibly over.

Regardless, to infer that dementia is not a significant problem that should not be further researched is both disingenuous and heartless.

What does heartlessness have to do with the law? Why should the government have a heart?

Sigh. It's multiplayer, actually. Both the arcade and NES versions. The fact that you don't know this indicates just how far both the healthcare and video gaming industry have sunk in this country.

Because people come in to argue with the headline which generates page views which generates advertising money for Drew. Have a look in the Farkives for the days before Fark was driven by advertising - there was more wit, less flame and far less bullsh*t.

* Unless you exercise personal choices the NHS does not agree with, in which case you get the luxury of paying for services you will be denied when you need them!
