You don't really understand the 'average' thing, do you.

2008-06-09 12:25:01 PM
Came in to say what Demetrius said: logically, there need never be more than a single person with a below-average score in anything.

2008-06-09 12:29:37 PM
Is someone confusing median and average again?

2008-06-09 12:30:57 PM
Demetrius: You don't really understand the 'average' thing, do you.-came here to say this

Set=1,2,3,10
Ave.=4
75% of data set is below average

OR

Outliers skew the mean

/sigh

HOLY CRAP! THAT'S LIKE 60 PERCENT!

My mileage at work covers my entire gas bill including all personal driving so I am really getting a kick out of some of these replies.

60% of the time it works every time.

2008-06-09 12:59:17 PM
Gee, ya think? I made 4.35 an hour or so at my first job, and gas cost about a buck a gallon. Now I make 8.25 an hour and gas costs 4 bucks a gallon. Damn, if only shiatty jobs' pay had increased to match I'd be banking 16+ dollars an hour!

I think subby was making a joke. Actually, I'm only half-sure.

Came for the mean vs. average smackdown. Not dissappointed.

2008-06-09 1:01:01 PM
Income is almost always expressed in terms of the MEDIAN. So making jokes about "half are below average" is prefectly acceptable...

Most Americans have more than the average number of legs.

Yes, and they will also have less pocket money to buy political rags disguised as newspapers of national record.

2008-06-09 1:03:08 PM
Newsflash: rural areas lack public transportation!

2008-06-09 1:03:29 PM
I make less money, but my gas consumption is minimal. I walk to work most days and within walking distance is plenty of restaurants, bars and recreational activities. I drive 1-2 a week for groceries/tanning/shopping.

So I'm not spending a higher proportion of my income on gas. You could also say "People with longer commutes are proportionally spending more money on gas."

2008-06-09 1:03:37 PM
What the NYT really needs is a simpler map: how many daily/weekly/monthly gallons of gas do people use in each area? (Or how much, in raw dollars, do they spend?) That would illustrate the pain of high gas prices without it being dependent upon income.

2008-06-09 1:04:04 PM
This is not obvious at all. People with very low income have no car, thus spend 0% on gas...

2008-06-09 1:05:07 PM
robisfunky: It's 911 times 1000!

That's right 911000!

2008-06-09 1:05:08 PM
Wow! And nearly half the country has below-average intelligence. Coincidence?

2008-06-09 1:06:00 PM
mattharvest: Came in to say what Demetrius said: logically, there need never be more than a single person with a below-average score in anything.

No, not really. Any value low enough to skew the average that far would be excluded as an outlier, thus restoring the average to a useful representation.

2008-06-09 1:06:03 PM
For me, when I spend more of my income on gas. There's less money for the people I love.
I do adjust my spending to reflect the rising costs of hookers and blow.
/blow getting pricier.
//hookers getting uglier.

ipomoea: Income is almost always expressed in terms of the MEDIAN. So making jokes about "half are below average" is prefectly acceptable...

That's nonsense: the word "average" is defined as the "mean". The word "median" refers to an entirely different concept.

Since the top 10% control something like 90% of the wealth, I'd say substantially more than half are below average.

looking at the income map all I can say is there are a lot of rich muthafarkers living in the Northeastern seaboard US. From Northern Virginia all the way up the coast to Maine.

2008-06-09 1:10:37 PM
Well, from that map it looks like the people that have to drive further in order to obtain goods and services, or find work, have to buy more gas than people who don't.

Amazingly, I already new that. And not because I live fairly close the that highest percentage area in Alabama.

Yeah, but wouldn't that skew the values the other way? I mean if people are rich enough to live in a rural area and have actual space (as opposed to living in a closet in the city) they would be in the upper income portion...
