Thats because China actually executes repeat offenders
2001-08-14 07:36:02 AM
tag should be Obvious, China exectues anybody anychance they get. Thats why those women over there pops out kids one after another.
2001-08-14 07:45:20 AM
You know, I hate when the person whom posts first says it all. Thanks Jeff.

Oh, wait, I just thought of another point. If we released all of the non-violent (DRUG) offenders, our jails would be nearly empty.
2001-08-14 07:48:38 AM
Show some %. Those make US # 1.
2001-08-14 07:50:56 AM
BizarreBehavior: Jails or Prisons? If we release all jails, 1/2 would be drug dealers, the other half would be piddly stuff like "i didnt pay child support" or "i like to dress up and go get rough with sheep" or "i had 423687 outstanding tickets" On the other hand, open the prisons up and you'll instantly turn America into a roasted pig with all the little wars that the violent bast's in prison would start.. But.. thats just one fellows opinion
2001-08-14 08:05:23 AM
Terron I'm sorry, I don't have the energy to form a valid argument against someone who is capable of working, "i like to dress up and go get rough with sheep" into a valid point. You win.
2001-08-14 08:06:03 AM
...and more young black men in prison than in College.
2001-08-14 08:29:37 AM
Whats even more damning is that China has over three times the US population, so the US rate per capita is astronomical.

Pity it doesn't work, huh?
2001-08-14 08:30:38 AM
Just the point I tried to make.
2001-08-14 09:16:30 AM
I was watching a programme on 3 prisoners in Oklahoma who were all up for parole. Tow murderers and one man who stole some barbed wire. Guess which one didn't get parole? Yep, the guy who stole barbed wire was considered a greater risk or showed less change for the better.

I hear they don't have barbed wire in China so that must be the reason
2001-08-14 09:18:17 AM
They specifically mention the source of the US figures but not those for the Chinese or Russian. Are they saying that the Chinese and Russian figures do not include all levels of incarceration. It's well known that neither of those countries like to disclose that sort of information.
2001-08-14 09:29:02 AM
2 million? That's a lot of ass raping going on.
2001-08-14 09:30:41 AM
Congratulations US. The US has more people in prison than China.
US population: 280,000,000
2001-08-14 09:32:31 AM
oops...stupid IE..stupid Netscape for crashing and making me use IE...
US population: 280,000,000
Chinese pop: 1,300,000,000
We totally kick ass in locking up more people than a totalitarian dictatorship. Go US!
2001-08-14 09:42:43 AM
Prisoners live better then we do, cable, movies, better medical benefits, it's like a private community, hell, who wouldn't want to be in prison?
2001-08-14 09:57:06 AM
Total population of the USA to the world population: 5%
Total prisoners of the USA to the world prisoners: 25%

taken from the economists overview for the year 2001 (or something like that)

Something else I think shouldn't be against the law here, besides drug usage, is prostitution. Selling is legal. Farking is legal. So why is selling farking illegal? You can do worse things to someone than giving them an orgasm.
2001-08-14 10:18:10 AM
Wow one in 200 is Gaol at any one time. Hands up who hasnt been to jail.
2001-08-14 11:15:56 AM
*raises a hand*
2001-08-14 11:20:40 AM
"release drug offenders"

What, just the nice drugs?

I think the main purpose of prison should be the slow starvation of violent offenders.

We could clean out the prisons in about a month.

World Citizen: Go back to the top and read what Jeff wrote.
2001-08-14 11:22:53 AM
I've served 1 night in jail, it was fun! I stood in the corner with my ass to the wall from 2 AM - 8 AM.
2001-08-14 11:29:22 AM
Albert: China executes a lot of people, but to keep up with the US as percentage of population in prison, they would have to execute millions--which they do not.
2001-08-14 12:04:32 PM
That's because the Chinese have good housekeeping habits and safely empty a few cells several times a year.
2001-08-14 12:11:36 PM
Chinese "women over there pops out kids one after another"? No they don't. There's a national law that a couple cannot legally have more than 1 child. Any pregnancies with 1 living child are forcefully aborted even into the 3rd trimester.
2001-08-14 12:24:15 PM
Maybe America has a better justice system. More cops. Better cops. More arrests. Less criminals free. So this statistic is a good thing. I'm actually proud that we have more people in jail. That means there is a smaller chance of me being robbed or shot. And don't say they are wrongful arrests. That's bullshiat. There are probably a couple innocent people in jail, but if you get arrested, you're not the best person to begin with.

Plus, all the illegal immigrants come here because their countries are shiat, and end up committing crimes here.
2001-08-14 12:42:02 PM
Yeah, our government may have better things to put our police to instead of running over protestors with tanks (somebody was going to bring it up):P

There are two ways you can look at a stat like this:

1.) We have an effective policing system in the U.S. which China has yet to match. We catch more criminals than China does - this does not mean that we have more crime, we merely fight it better.

2.) We are a pool of filth that attracts criminals like a magnet. We should be more like big brother China and turn more into a facist society to better our ways - even if that does mean killing innocent people with opposing views along the way.

I doubt that we are a filth pool.. and I doubt we have the best policing system in the world. Somewhere in between is where we are. We are good enough to keep a lot of criminals off the streets, but still have more to put away.
2001-08-14 01:05:46 PM
America's prison overcrowding can be summed up in one word: drugs.
We consume more, we prosecute more, and we put more in prison than anyone else in the world.
2001-08-14 01:28:13 PM
Prison in China isn't a holiday like it is in the US. And with harsh punishment for almost all crimes, most people are too scared to think about even committing a 'petty' crime.

You might want to look at these links, I think it explains it all.

Baby #2 isn't just aborted as a fetus. I read an article in Reader's Digest about aborting one right after birth.
2001-08-14 02:11:55 PM
As of 1998 there were 3452 people on death row in the US. That's an awful long row.
2001-08-14 02:19:40 PM
America - Land of the free?
2001-08-14 02:22:20 PM
OK, checked out the sites. Each one mentioned that China probably executed anywhere from 1263 to more than 4000 people per year.

"Catherine Baber of Amnesty International noted that China waged a previous Strike Hard in 1996, executing more than 4,000 people"

This still comes no where near the disparity in population imprisoned per capita.

China, with 1.3 billion people has 1.4 million in jail. The US, with 280 million, has 2 million in jail.

That's 0.7 percent of the US population in prison, and 0.1 percent of the Chinese population in prison. To equal our percentage rate, they would have to put another 7.8 million people in prison, or a total of 9.2 million people. I doubt that by executing even 5000 people per year that they are making up that 7.8 million people difference (it would take them 1560 years to do so).

Did anyone see that great ex-con movie "Weeds" starring Nick Nolte? If not,its worth the rent on video. At the end of the movie he makes a lot of good points about why people are in jail.
2001-08-14 02:44:17 PM
Hmm... it feels like Rei should be here.
2001-08-14 02:46:59 PM
Harbinger; right after birth isn't abortion, it's murder. In either case, baby #2 isn't allowed to live.
2001-08-14 03:31:29 PM
Forced abortion for everyone!!! YAY!!!
2001-08-14 03:56:01 PM
Why do I keep getting those emails from the chinese embassy?
2001-08-14 04:13:42 PM
Once again, America is First!

And if anyone thinks prison/jail = holiday, whether it's in China or the U.S., you're ficked.
2001-08-14 04:22:53 PM
We lock up more people because the prison guard unions like to increase their membership. (Waiting for liberal heads to explode as they decide which position to attack :-)
2001-08-14 04:52:06 PM
I think most people would understand what I meant is that RELATIVELY US prisions are a holiday when compared to Chinese prisions. By no means did I mean US prisons ARE a holiday, period!
2001-08-14 05:24:03 PM
How can anyone say what it is like in their prisons, you can imagine, but I have seen media of China's prison system and it isn't what is portrayed in peoples minds, but in reality they have a 2% recidivism rate with a focus on rehabilitation, not torture. In many south american countries the crime of rape gives the immediate family of the victem assasinate the attacker in any way deemed nesessary by the family, normaly they are tied to a tree and lit on fire slowly from their feet up. Not very many instances of rape occur in these cultures. I wonder why?
2001-08-14 05:50:51 PM
this reminds me of a stand up act i saw once. the comedian talked about how if he were about to be raped in a prison, he'd try to rape the person back. he then did a demonstration by running around in circles pretending to hold his package. funny stuff.
2001-08-14 11:22:18 PM
I don't suppose all those executions actually DETER any crime.

And it's certainly not the fact that China has cops in military uniforms with ASSAULT RIFLES standing on the corners and walking up and down the streets.

Yeah, that's right, I've seen it-- and that's Hong Kong, not even mainland China. I'm afraid to even cross against the light when I'm over there.

You don't get a slap on the wrist in China; I wholeheartedly expect crime to be lower there.

But that's just me, and all this crazy common sense I got.

2001-08-15 12:08:34 AM
So you're saying that we should become a hard core machine gun toting dictatorship to lower our crime?
The US could obviously lower its crime rate. Declare martial law to get rid of those pesky civil liberties, bring out Big Brother, throw another few percent of the population behind barbed wire, and I'm pretty sure we can get that crime rate down around zero. It did work for the Soviet Union. Unfortunately, a free society has to chose where to draw the line between safety and freedom.
2001-08-15 12:12:39 AM
I'm thinking that I would not want to be in a prison in any country, but the US prisons scare me more than most of the world's prisons. I would not be afraid of the guards or the warden, I would be afraid of the other prisoners. I've lived in Asia, and the people that inhabited their "bad" neighborhoods didn't scare me anywhere near as much as the the people that inhabit our bad neighborhoods. Of course, in third world countries you have third world prison conditions, which would also really suck. Bottom line, if you have to go to prison, go to prison in Europe (or North Dakota).
2001-08-15 12:36:55 AM
First: Executions in China are 1700+ according to Amnesty International. That doesn't make up the difference in the number of prisoners.

Second: The "War on Drugs" only feeds the problem.

And about the forced abortions. At least we *don't* do that. *looks morally superior*
