You know, after seeing the numbers in the article I'm not too sure outlawing discrimination based on weight would be a good thing.

Fat discrimination...it DOES exist...as evidenced by all the farking morons on this thread.

2008-05-23 8:09:40 PM
They mention that overweight white women get the short end of the stick. That's because employers favor good looking people in general. This means tall, slender, under 45 and well-dressed. This is especially true for front-facing people like receptionists, booth babes, marketing and sales. It has nothing to do with notions of health insurance or longevity. People just want to hire eye candy. Period. No analysis necessary.

I don't think anyone is saying it doesn't exist. We're just saying (and TFA appears to agree) that it's justified due to the increased costs associated with hiring the obese.

Yeah.. cause everyone goes to Hooters for their awesome lard-assed 400lb females, who are the reason why your 1/4lb burger only weighs in at 1/8lb.

Try this line...

"Put down the cheeseburger and step away from the buffet"

Go ahead - sue me. I was once in this boat. A little discipline, some exercise, and gastric bypass surgery have allowed me to keep 170 pounds off my big butt for four years now. You can't just do the weight loss surgery - you must have a little discipline and say no to yourself.

Unless you have a illegitimate medical condition that prevents you from losing weight, Then if your weight prevents you from a good job you might want to rethink your diet.

I feel that severe overweight should be treated like smoking. But oh noz that might offend people. (apparently smokers aren't people but fat people are) You cause the health system more than the average smoker and weight is not that hard to lose. Simply eating a salad once a day will do wonders to your system. Hell eating just cereal for breakfast instead of that McMuffin will make you drop the pounds.

I'm not a thin person but I manage my weight and sometimes that means no i can't have the second handful of bacon. I just want to live to a decent age where at my funeral they don't need a fork lift to lower me in. 20-30 pounds overweight is fine but not 100.

Raging Thespian: We're just saying (and TFA appears to agree) that it's justified due to the increased costs associated with hiring the obese.

So by the same logic, we should discriminate against smokers as well and not hire any of them, since statistically they use up much more healthcare and are out more frequently than non-smokers. How's that one sound?

You left out the news media. They like to hire hot, skinny, young white women for new anchors, then fire them when they get too old.

wgm_007: you must have a little discipline and say no to yourself.

So if that's all it takes, why did you need the weight loss surgery? You could have done it all on your own if you wanted to...you just didn't have the willpower to do it with all the weight you had put on before that.

It is not nice to say, and I am prolly a bastard for saying it.... but I really do not like when an obese person site next to me on a flight and their body overflows into my space. I mean, is this fair to me?

I am curious to what the Farkaverse has to say about that...

I'm all for discrimination against fat people. Unless you have a doctors note saying you can not lose weight it's just like smoking. If you wanna be fat, fine, but don't expect me to cry for you over a personal choice!

This is why I choose aisle seats. I spill over into the aisle vs. onto the person sitting next to me.

Juylie: So bissy the same logic, we should discriminate against smokers as well and not hire any of them, since statistically they use up much more healthcare and are out more frequently than non-smokers. How's that one sound?

Sorry, I wasn't paying attention I was too busy smoking.

Actually, the costs associated with smoking don't have as direct an impact as being obese. I'm guessing that smokers don't lose work hours or take worker's comp to the extent that the obese do. That said, employers are starting to come down harder on the smokers in their employ, from charging more for healthcare to outright banning their employees from doing it.

I think fat people should not be allowed at buffets. I mean, by the time my skinny ass gets to the desert line, all of the good stuff is gone, leaving me with crumbs and a stomach without cheesecake.

The same should be enforced by law if someone can't fit in one airline seat, if they need two bar stools, or in elevators where they take up 1/2 of the max capacity. Those situations become unpleasant for other people, and in some situations, dangerous. And how many times have I seen a car that has the driver's side dragging on the ground because their shocks can't handle the undue stress? That becomes a hazardous situation to all others on the road, IMO.

/i mean, people can't smoke in most public places because it is unpleasant to others
//flame on!

A couple friends and I went to see Knocked Up really stoned. The only group of three seats had this woman sitting next to one of them. My friend and I chose the farthest seat from her, while my other friend had to sit next to her. He didn't realize it at first, but when he put his arm on the armrest, it actually rested on the "overflow" of the woman next to him. When he pointed it out I laughed uncontrollably and he had to get up and leave cause he was so creeped out. I was crying laughing before the movie even started, a great sign.

homerdrew415: So you're saying I can't be a drug rep for doctor's offices?

WHat's amazing about that is that they get like 5 minutes with the male doctors they want to see ... and hours and hours of dealing with the front desk receiptionists and nurses. Wouldn't it be better to hire some male eye candy for a drug rep?

homerdrew415 - that is what arm rests are for. I have skymiles elite status, get on the plane first, and get them the freak down next to me. If the person next to me doesn't fit, tough.
