So... what?

"We're not in a recession!"
"We're not in a recession!"
"We're not in a recession!"
"We're not in a recession!"
"We're not in a recession!"
"We were in a recession, but it's over. We think."

???

With any luck, the second half of this year will be better than the so-far rocky first half.

I heard this back in 2001. Counted on it, too. Nope.

It's not at all hard to tell when you're in or out of a recession. A recession is at least two consecutive quarters of negative growth in GDP. The recession stops when the GDP starts growing again.

/Of course our GDP hasn't gone negative yet (so not even one quarter of negative growth yet), but don't let that stop anyone from misusing the term "recession" any time soon.

Being mentally retarded is a prerequisite for a job with the Associated Press, as is being an ignorant left-winger... of course these two requirements are highly correlated.

Oh, don't say that. You'll just anger twilson2, and he'll be forced to tell you all about how great an economy we had under Jimmy Carter. Did you know Jimmy Carter created 50 bajillion jobs and single-handedly created the American middle class? Did you know that Jimmy Carter invented the internal combustion engine and ended poverty? You can learn this and more by removing twilson2 from your ignore list.

I really liked Jimmy Carter as a person, and still do. I realize his presidency was horrid (I was rather young), but he meant well.

The Economist projects the US GDP to grow by 1.7% in 2009.

Just sayin'. :)

Fail. The NBER defines a recession and they don't use the simple two quarters GDP definition.

That's retarded. It was FDR who did all those things, not Carter. Carter simply didn't have enough time to get his Presidency in order. If he only had more time to deal with the Republican failures from Nixon and Ford.
