Well, its been about 7 months since I had a Fark ad up. I've made a bunch of changes since the abomination that was the old design. The site now hosts science news releases from a variety of sources (you may have seen a few of these links on Fark), has free user blogs, and RSS feeds for every news category. The site is set up as a social network for scientists, but I think it would be cool to get scientists and the public discussing scientific topics in one place on-line. So it's not an exclusive network by any means.

Anyway, check out the site and let me know what you think. It's still a work in progress. I'd appreciate any feedback here or on the site. Also, submissions to Fark, diggs, reddits, and stumbles are nice too!

I think it's a pretty cool idea.
Keep up the good work!

You seemed like a pretty respectable guy (plus I liked your handle) so I gave it a click. Not bad, but the text color with the background design and color bothers me for some reason. I have no idea what combination would look better, but you should be happy with any constructive criticism at all, considering this is the classifieds.

I remember you from the last time you posted. You were nice about everything & your site was pretty decent. It's not my cup of tea, but I'll pass the good word around.

Great site, but you gotta get off the google ads man. Put together some advertising packages and hire a pubslishers representative firm to sell ad inventory for ya. They work straight commission and will sell their arses off for you.

Here's a good place to start...Link (new window) Best of luck.

Ah, the exception which proves the rule. Thank you subby, for putting forth something worthwhile to advertise, as well as actually taking the time to listen to users' suggestions regarding design. Bookmarked it last time, and feel good about it still.

Woot!

I played a lot with the font color. Black had way too much contrast with the rest of the page so I went with something on the dark side of blue. I'll toy with some darker colors.

That's actually a great idea. I'm only seeing about 4,000 unique visitors a month with 30,000 page views so I'm not sure I have enough exposure yet to waste some poor advertiser's time. Maybe in a few months when I get a bigger following I'll look at it more seriously. I bookmarked the page though!

Good concept, only thing I don't like is the design is way too white.

Congratulations on being the nugget amongst the dross.

Bren_34: Good concept, only thing I don't like is the design is way too white.

Too much? Everything I've ever read about web design says that pages should have good contrast and the majority of users prefer to read dark text on a white background. I'm also shooting for the "lab look," bright and simple, in this design. I'll do some work on my dev server and see if I find something I like. Thanks for the suggestion.

Inihilus: Congratulations on being the nugget amongst the dross.

Thanks!

FTFY. That was a great suggestion. Thanks!

RottNDude, Check it out again with the fixed background. I think it looks much better now.

I agree a little on this.
If the background were a little less distracting it might help.
The contrast on the rest is fine, but on wider screen it pulls my attention to it a little too much.

Hmmm, I kinda see it now. I'm not sure it bothers me enough to change it though. What if it was lighter? I'll play with it on the dev server and see if I can't find something that's better.

Lighter or darker would work.
Mostly it's the contrast between the dark gridlines and the white in the background really pulls focus from the main content area when scrolling to read articles when you're viewing at above a 1024 res.

I'll put in another vote for the gridlines being lighter. Also, I think it'd be easiest to read if the text was simply black instead of the current dark blue-- sometimes simple is best.

Overall it's a nice site; best of luck with it.

Ok, by popular demand, I cut the grid by 50%. I had to remove the fixed background though because it was making any div containing javascript jump 20 pixels up or down whenever the page scrolled in firefox. Since the background is lighter it isn't as distracting during scroll now. Thanks for all of the suggestions everyone.

Thanks everyone for visiting and giving me some great feedback.
