He says he lives in North Potomac? Maybe now he'll be able to move out of Rockville to the real Potomac, MD.

I've been sitting on grannyamputeescatporn.com since 1994; I should be able to rake in at least a million

Exactly, I think it only pertains to trade marked names like Hasbro, Chevrolet, etc...

2008-04-03 2:12:14 PM
Cyber squatting referrs to someone registering a trademarked name and holding it hostage, say nike.com etc. But generic names are perfectly fine to squat on, like business.com

I'm glad nintendo finally bought out zelda.com

Holy crap. In the early days of the intertubes, I tried to show a coworker that even the government was easily accessed by the web.

Of course, being I am just used to typing in .com...

At least she had a sense of humor.

I don't even want to think about what that internet site would show.

In 1994 I thought it cost a lot more than $20.

Some people/companies have way too much money to throw away on stupid crap like this, though. The inequity between rich and poor is absurd.

I think it would have been illegal if he would have registered pizzahut.com and then tried selling it. If you register something that is common name, like water.com and not the company name like aquafina.com you should be ok.

Registering the domain "www.pi.zza" in 1994 in one of those applets that offered "domains with extended name": $20.

Auctioning that same domain name off in 2008: priceless. I mean, as in zero.

Lately, I've been in the habit of going to the .coms of everyday words and short phrases.

I'll tell you what's disturbing, the ads on poop.com.

I used to work at the company that hosted pizza.com. I think it was 1999 and we handled some kind of software where you'd fill our a web form, and we'd print it out and fax it to whoever was really delivering the pizza. I wasn't involved, and I don't even think I ever got pizza.com to work.

That's because the domain names often match keywords used to search, said Catherine Pancake, director of account services at Web Ad.vantage Inc., an Internet marketing firm based in Havre de Grace.

Of course, you could squat on NIke.com. All you would have to do is put up a bunch of pictures of the Greek god nike, and show that the site was a gathering point for people interested in ancient greek culture and conservation. As long as there is a legitimate use, Nike couldnt do shiat, and would have to pay whatever you wanted.
