(Some Guy) Hero Rep. Michael R. DesRoches (D., N.H., No-Show) resigns after 16 months in Congress in which he never showed up on Capitol Hill and never cast a vote. We need about 584 more just like him   (unionleader.com) divider line

It's the state legislature, Subby. NH has the second largest legislative body in the English speaking world, behind the US Congress. If I wanted to, I could run for state rep and represent my apartment complex. Seriously.

/It's funny though.

Technically subby is right about the guy never showing up in the Capitol, what with him being part of the State Assembly and not the US Congress.

But the guy definitely deserves the Hero tag. He got paid for doing NOTHING for over a year.

Jeez, that barely buys you 1/20th of Eliot Spitzer's hooker.

True, but he DID get paid.

Even though his annual salary wouldn't cover the cost of one week's worth of commuting.

585?

100 Senators,
435 Members of the House.

100+435=535, who are the extra 50?

If I lived in NH, I'd run and represent Fark. Then I'd introduce the Free Booze on Sundays Act and get it signed into law. It'd be awesome. :)

I wonder how much he spent getting elected -- if anything.

4th, actually. After the US Congress, Westminster, and the Indian Parliament. Highest citizen to legislator ration in the country for the lower house though. 400 Reps works out to about one for every 3,000 citizens. That's one of the reasons NH was chosen for the Free State Project.

/they also passed a marijuana decrim bill recently

Yo math guys- it's talking about the NH state legislature, not the US Congress.

/Didn't really pay attention- that might not have been what the argument was about.

How is this assclown different from any other politician... republican or democrat?

The republicans, when they're not doing meth of a gay hooker's ass in a public restroom, are farking up the country and the democrats are pretty much just useless.

Hi. I just want to interrupt the partisan bickering long enough to say that too many people are doing the (D-somewhere) thing wrong. See, you have to make it funny and you have to make the "-somewhere" part connect to the "D" (or "R") either as a letter or as a stand-in syllable. So in this case, (D-erelict) or (D-serter) would be the way to go. If he were a Republican, it would be (R-ecess) or something. Thank you for your attention to this matter.

The New Hampshire General Court has 400 Representatives and 24 Senators for a grand total of 424. And it's not called "Congress" nor does it meet on "Capitol Hill".

Shouldn't public servant's be obligated to show up and do their jobs? Imagine if a cop wouldn't show up for work, he'd get his ass fired! If law enforcement is like that, why not lawmakers?!

Imagine if being elected to Congress meant you had to be present for every vote, nobody would ever run!

Oooh, this is epic fail. Subby, you must have slept through all that boring American Government stuff in school. There's a mighty big difference between state legislatures and the US Congress.

If its a full tiem job then it's a crying shame that the legislators are paid only $100/year. I know advocating pay raises for Polticians ain't exactly a popular idea, but when you det the pay that low you are baiscally insuring that only the olready wealthy, and those on the take can serve, which isn't a great idea either.

Most of the NH House is made up of retired old curmudgeons and the independantly wealthy. With so many gosh durn reps, NH would have to enact a state income tax to pay the legislators double what they currently make.

I used to run a bar in downtown Concord. These guys are considered a joke. But they strut around town like they own the country...
