If you were Jewish, and you were baking a German chocolate cake, would you maybe leave it in the oven just a little bit longer than normal?

Nice try subby but those are pennies most of us are unlikely to have. Call me back when they're talking about the crap I have in the jar on top of my dryer.

What does this have to do with anything?

If I was selling 301 antique pennies, they would most certainly become ass pennies before transfer of ownership.

Haha! You just paid 10 mil for asspennies!

Good thing I'm not one of those "most of us" people. I started my collecting (numismating, lolol) when I found a very exceptional 1984 double die penny in some Wal-Mart change. That, along with some Morgans and whatnot have made me a very nice sum to fall back on if I choose to sell. Not to sound like a late-night Infomercial, but my collecting and trading got me a %300 or so return on my investments.

Don't have any gold though. Gold is for pussies.

The oldest penny I ever found was in my spare change from the supermarket. A pretty smooth 1929 wheat penny.

So a double-struck penny is worth three cents?

2008-02-17 9:59:17 PM
Step 1: get coin (or toy or anything else) that's made in very limited quantities
Step 2: wait 200 years
Step 3: profit!

If a penny is worth $300K after 200 years, that works out to about 9% per year. Buy stocks.

went to the post office and used their stamp machine and the change i got had a nickel in it. didn't really pay attention until i got back to the car and seen it was a buffalo nickel. checked and I think they were minted between 1913-28. but there is only one that is extremely rare and that is the one where somebody at the mint forgot to take off the 1917 die and it has a double cast of 1917-1918. Mine is pretty much worthless. So worn out that the date is gone and there is no mint mark on the back.

/second rarest buffalo nickel is the "three legged buffalo"

jfarkinB: Buy stocks.

You could always buy the wrong stocks.

Well, if you take inflation into account, that's probably accurate.

TrentSteel68: You could always buy the wrong stocks.

Ya, and beating the market is almost impossible, so I would put most of my money (75%) in index funds, and then try to make some smart plays outside of that. And of course, this doesn't factor in diversifying in other instruments.

2008-02-17 10:16:52 PM
i'd like to think 10.7 million could have bought another 'f' for that headline.

Guess what? The US Cent is known in vernacular as a penny. Nearly everyone knows that "penny" isn't the official name, but almost no one cares.

I have a small collection of silver pesos with me.

One always imagines that silver, gold and copper are pretty and very shiny. No one really tells you that the more pure the metal is, the duller it gets.

I was trolling for "yes it has." and got "who cares?" instead.

A fat lot of fun you are.

Look at this, Doctor Jones. A common pocket watch. It's worthless... ten dollars from any vendor at the market, but if you put it in the ground for a thousand years it becomes priceless.

2008-02-18 12:28:10 AM
Wonder if it was part of the old Garrett collection- that was an impressive set.

Coins can be pretty interesting, and quite profitable if done right. I collect half dollars, and every week I'll get a couple rolls of halves when I deposit my paycheck. Check for silver, spend the rest. So far I'm up over 140 of them, just counting the 90% silver ones.

As silver value alone, that's a shade under a thousand bucks in silver. As coins, a bit more, say twelve hundred.

Cost to me? Fifty cents each. 1300% profit isn't bad.
