Maybe one of the resident fundies can stop by and explain how a gay penguin couple is a threat to heterosexual marriage.

What the hell Loudon County? Seriously, what the hell?

I think I'll write to the Superintedent's Office and let them know how retarded they're acting.

This book teaches children that it's okay to be in, or know, someone who has a "non-traditional" family.

THE HORROR!

Bah, so what? Places like this should be promoted and advertised as a magnet region for farking imbeciles. Get the ones living near me to move there the nuke them from orbit because it's the only way to be sure.

chimp_ninja: Maybe one of the resident fundies can stop by and explain how a gay penguin couple is a threat to heterosexual marriage.

Because, as pointed out above, they like to think gays are a 'sin' because they're unnatural, since homosexuality doesn't exist in the animal kingdom. This book is yet another that proves them wrong, and they can't handle the truth.

Oh_Enough_Already
I was once having an arguement with some Christian zealot type about homosexuality and they claimed that homosexuality was unnatural (and hence "a sin") since it didn't exist in the animal kingdom and that only humans did it.

I informed them that, in fact, some rabbits, chimps & whales (amongst other species) all had homoseual sex with one another.

Their response:

"Well, those rabbits monkeys and whales are going to hell then!!!"

What, I wonder, must life be like completely divorced from reason and logic?

That reason + logic-free life must indeed be scary.
Don't these same folks believe that animals don't have souls?
If so, are those animals sent to hell for being soulless or just queer?

I wish reading books like this hadn't made me gay. Plus a guy in a tuxedo turns me on more than it should.

Okay...so the average human life expectancy in the US is what now? 80 years?

When good Christians die they go to Heaven for ETERNITY.

Is 80 years really too long for people to live and let live?
You've got an eternity where you don't have to deal with us godless heathens, you can't put up for 80 years?

2008-02-14 1:10:13 PM
You can't win any arguments about homosexuality by referencing the natural world.

When animals don't engage in homosexual behavior, the anti-gays say "see, this proves homosexuality is unnatural!"

But when animals do engage it this (and most species do!), they say "this just shows how bestial and abberrant it is!"

Maybe if we hide the gays from our children, they'll never find out that gayness exists. Maybe the gays will go away altogether. It worked for sex when we implemented abstinence-only programs.

First it's the penguins, next it'll be man-on-box-turtle action. Santorum was right.

What, you want your kids to catch teh ghey?

It's penguins. I'm pretty sure they are not humping each other in the book.
Of course, Tango will need a few years of therapy when he gets older.

Well I'll be buying a copy of that for my 6 year old and I'll be making sure his Arlington county elementary library has a copy. (They almost certainly do because Arlington has nowhere near the level of stupidity as Loudoun.)

2008-02-14 1:15:26 PM
I'm thinking about all those Emperor Penquin males that sit on the egg all frigging winter long - isn't that female of them?

logruszed: Bah, so what? Places like this should be promoted and advertised as a magnet region for farking imbeciles. Get the ones living near me to move there the nuke them from orbit because it's the only way to be sure.

It's not a region for imbeciles. Loudoun County used to be rural just 10-15 years ago, but the area has become incredibly yuppified now that housing close to DC has become unaffordable for middle-income workers. Federal employees who can't pay half a mil for a 2-bedroom in Arlington live in Loudoun.

Sterling, however, is a white trash sinkhole.

2008-02-14 1:15:40 PM
First this, whats next? Are they going to take away the copies of Blue Boy? (do they even make that anymore?)

How about Genre? Instinct? Men's Health?

Virginia elementary schools pull from their shelves a true story about a penguin with two dads.

The movie version of Mr. Holland's Opus really wasn't very faithful to the book, was it?

I think this is the first time i've ever heard of an attention whore childrens book.

Come on people, lets not bring children into politics/religious struggles.

I was so scared that this was going to be from my home town but boy, did I dodge a bullet - it's one county over. Hopefully, with the current jet stream, the stupidity will drift eastward.

We're gonna get that VA tag yet!

What would Whale Hell be like? No water?

But how did you know those birds were gay?

Are you kidding, did you see how well-dressed they were?

2008-02-14 1:18:34 PM
I live in TN and I read in the local paper yesterday that a state representative would like to get all references to homosexuals banned in grades K-8 because children are not ready for that "type" of subject matter.

No wonder people think that southerners are back-assward.

The worst part about it is that most of the people commenting on the KNS website were in total agreement because as good God-fearing people, being teh ghey is wrong.

Children are smarter than many people give them credit for. Kids can handle it.

TFA did not say that the penguins were homosexual, merely that they cooperated to raise a baby penguin.

Children might be smarter, but I think they should be entitled to their innocence for as long as possible.

Seriously stop regurgitating this "non-traditional/one world, one people" ideology you're fed from TV. A book of this subject matter written using penguins was aimed at children specifically. The book has an agenda. It's no more of value than those damn Conservative and Liberal children's books portraying Hillary and Obama and Cheney.

/Has absolutely nothing against homosexuality.
//Believes the world should sober up and actually judge the merit of what is expressed before you just blindly bow your head and begin to shout that everyone's opinion is valid and everything in the world adds to the "tapestry of humanity"
///Tell that bullshiat to 3rd world warlords hoarding international relief food, or the 5-year-old sex slaves in the dark corners of the world, or even those morons that hold snakes and drink poison and deny their children even basic antibiotics - For the Lord.

Penguin lust is nothing but urges from satan!

/according to Oral Bill...

"Every child might not be ready for that," Byard said. "They might not be mature enough to deal with that subject matter."

So much maturity is needed to understand the idea of two penguins taking care of an egg.

Now, a Mapplethorpe book, on the other hand, might be a little advanced for elementary school kids.

2008-02-14 1:21:15 PM
OMG how narrow minded do you have to be to get this book yanked off of the shelves. The kids would read it, ask a bunch of questions like they always do and then go off to recess...........

Children might be smarter, but I think they should be entitled to their innocence for as long as possible.

They also shouldn't have to be subjected to prejudice for as long as possible.

2008-02-14 1:21:58 PM
It's a sin to be gay unless you're a preacher snorting meth of a male hookers ass or a law maker toe tapping in public restrooms.

2008-02-14 1:22:24 PM
hey, ignorance is bliss. these folks are just trying to force a little bliss down the throats of children. is that so wrong?

2008-02-14 1:22:37 PM
StormnMormon: Children might be smarter, but I think they should be entitled to their innocence for as long as possible.

I hardly think a story about two penguins taking care of an egg is going to sully their innocence.
