not Berkeley........

This is all-too-common among institutions of higher learning. Georgetown Law was refusing to let recruiters on campus a while ago due to an ideological disagreement over "Don't Ask, Don't Tell", and they ended up caving when the Supreme Court upheld the Solomon Amendment and they realized they'd lose federal funding.

If you ask me, it's disgusting that even private schools are so bound to federal money that they have to alter their policies in order to keep it flowing. It really says a lot about how broken this country's education system is.

Awww, crap...that's what I get for not RTFA. My point stands, though.

like i said before, slavery never died.

it just went from "racial" to "economic"

/the root of all evil

Meh, theres a whole building dedicated to the armed forces here. They don't bother people. The most the recruiters do is pass out pamphlets and they pass out a lot less than all the other stupid groups on campus.

The Republican plan would give the funds, intended for a school lunch program...to the Marines instead.

"Patriotic American taxpayers won't sit quietly while Berkeley insults our brave Marines," said one of the senators.

Yes, the real patriots would rather see food taken out of kids mouths.

Stay classy, GOP.

Ann Cooper with the Berkeley Unified School District wants both sides to play nice.

"Senators sitting 3,000 miles away are trying to take food away from the children of Berkeley," said Cooper. "Why? Because the Marines and the city aren't playing nice -- and that's just not OK

Hope she used her inside voice when she said this otherwise it's time-out for Ann.

Berkely City left a permanent parking spot in front of the Marine Recruiting center for the Code Pink folks?

That'll insure LOLz aplenty.

2008-02-07 4:43:42 PM
One thing to not want the Marines there, but then giving the Pink ladies the parking space in front of the place to protest, that was painting a big red target of your chest for the critics.

You have to ask yourself, what's more important, values or dollars? If you say dollars, that is just sad.

doing something in my town where we had a values Vs. Dollar question. I took integrity over the dollars.

On the other hand, it's kind of like my son. If he wants to do something or wants money...he better do what I tell him or he gets nothing.

He caves faster than Pamela Anderson at a wet T-shirt contest.

So, these colleges should be able to attack the US government with impunity and expect absolutely no repercussions? Is that what you are suggesting? How would you propose to "fix" that?

They won't be happy until all of the money that goes to education is in Iraq, building military bases out the ass for the next generation of marines.

2008-02-07 4:45:11 PM
So does this mean that all the hippies can still stage "die-ins" in front of the recruiters, or is that prohibited too?

2008-02-07 4:45:12 PM
I wonder if Berkley will ask for help from the 'evil Army' if they are invavded? Or will they be like France and just go along as willing participants?

2008-02-07 4:46:07 PM
Let this be a lesson, students.

Life is a compromise.

2008-02-07 4:46:13 PM
I think Berkeley should have been happy they were going to lose federal funds. After all its the same money that's being used to pay those who are killing all the babies in Iraq!

Yeah, the army would totally give them a choice in the matter.

Um, not quite:

"The bills would take away $2 million in federal funding from UC Berkeley and a local foundation that provides lunches to the Berkeley Unified School District."

Well if pedofiles can't go on Myspace and around schools neither should recruiters.

I agree with Berkley and keep recruiters away from schools so they don't lie to our kids to be unwelcome occupiers in this illegal war. Only idiots fight and die for Bush.

There are a small number of colleges like Hillsdale in MI and (I think) Grove City in PA that have maintained their independence by refusing to accept any subsidies or support from federal and state agencies. These schools offset the fact that their students aren't eligible to participate in federal student aid programs by raising private donations to help fund scholarships.

We're going to take your money in the form of taxes, and unless you support our every endeavour, you won't even get a penny of it back.

cartersdad: You have to ask yourself, what's more important, values or dollars? If you say dollars, that is just sad.

That's how many stupid federal laws get promulgated. When they can't torture the Commerce Clause far enough to have jurisdiction (and that is saying A LOT), they just say "Do this or you don't get federal highway funds." Like the drinking age or speed limits. Louisiana tried to buck the drinking age thing for a few years but caved eventually.

So, where they can't make the states slaves, they make them whores. All the same when farkin' time comes. But at least a slave has the comfort on knowing they didn't choose their slavery.
