You're not suggesting that the American free press resorts to fear mongering, are you?

"In a shower of pink slips, U.S. employers cut jobs last month for the first time in more than four years, the starkest signal yet that the economy is grinding to a halt if it hasn't already toppled into recession."

This is what gets me. All these economy experts out there, and they can't tell us if we're in a recession, or if we are out of it.

And men might not panic so much if it were a pink lip blizzard.

I'd prefer some job cuts.

Even total losers are getting jobs in my industry, and that's not good for anybody.

I can't claim to be an expert, but in the past week both my immediate manager and a friend of mine who used to be a coworker got laid off, in his case for the second time in 4 months. They're both in the Northeastern US.

Obviously it's anecdotal evidence, it's only two people, and their loss of jobs won't even be recorded until the end of the month anyway, but it's becoming increasingly difficult to buy into the "everything is peachy" polyanna view of the economy.

The problem is, given the way our population and economies work... you can't just be growing, you need to be growing at a certain rate, or relative to everything else, you're falling behind. Yes, the retarded kid in the class is learning, but he's still just getting farther behind every day that passes.

The problem with that is that, officially, you can't tell that you're in a recession until after it has already happened. A recession is defined as two consecutive quarters of negative growth, so you'll be six months into one before you can officially say that, yes, one is going on.

Hence the weasel words, I bet.

2008-02-04 8:15:24 PM
You were expecting the MSM to play up the good and play down the bad economic news in an election year with a Republican incumbent? If so, you haven't been paying attention.

1980: Reagan elected.

All through the 80's were story after story of the "homeless".

1992: Clinton elected. If you were watching the MSM you would think the homeless problem had been solved. Nary a peep about them for two full terms.

2000: Bush elected. Stories about the homeless return to our newspapers and airwaves!

The MSM. They can disappear thousands of people for eight years. Don't fark with them.

Times are tighter then a mormon girl! I've been looking for 3 monthes and can't find work. Not just respectable work- any work. The shiat jobs won't hire me because they think (rightly so) that I'll jump ship as soon as a better offer comes along, and the jobs in my field are getting tons of replies so there's always someone more qualified. It seems the medical field is the only thing going right now.

During freshman year of college, my roommate and I spent the better part of the year coming up with awesome band names, despite the fact that neither of us played an instrument.

Pink Slip Pileup, Deadbeat Debauchery, and The Frisbee Aftermath were our favorites.

That would work despite your sarcasm, when was the last time you received a paycheck from a poor person, or even a middle class one?

2008-02-04 8:34:40 PM
spamdogbeerbaron, perhaps it had more to do with the policies of Reagan vs. Clinton? As you are in Australia, I'll cut you some slack and explain it to you.

There have always been "homeless" in this country, as least as long as I have been alive, and much before, I am sure.

We just used different terminology. We called them "bums", "bindlestiffs" or just plain old "hobos". The place where they lived was not called an "encampment" we called it "skid row".

Then teh EEEEEEVIL Reagan got elected and they needed to pile on. Some consultant, opinion maker, or think tank came up with this whole "homeless" crisis out of whole cloth, complete with new terminology.

There were "homeless" before Reagan, there were "homeless" after Reagan, there are "homeless" today. Not one president has done a tinker's damn about it aside from paying lip service.

In short, another fake crisis, displayed when expedient. Just like the phony economic bad news. Let me ask you, if the economy is so bad, how come people that know and have been correct in the past, like Bob Brinker, just aren't seeing it?

FYI, the Reagan years marked a time of unprecedented growth and prosperity, a time when the poor and in particular minorities were uplifted economically like never before in our history, but if you watched the MSM here, you would never believe it, as many still do not.

But numbers don't lie, so I'll stick with those. They help me beat the stupid folks in the Stock Market, and vote for the right person come election time.

The MSM is powerful. The can practically talk us into a recession, just like Jimmy Carter did. There's your real evil.

Because you've been listening to the old media.

It's called an inflection point. If you don't think the next year or two will suck on the job market, then you aren't paying attention.

It's the same bs as when the stock market goes up everyweek for 3 years and then one day it drops. Instead panic, end of the western world type news. Two days later, it's already regained its loss and is climbing again and a few people (probably in the news field) became filthy rich off it.

spamdog: "Four straight years of growth" why do I not believe this?

Oh, it grew. The same way most salaries have tended to "grow". Well below inflation. CEOs with insane salaries raised the salary average. Everybody else lost ground.

... The same way unemployment went steadily down, because they simply stop counting unemployed people after they were unable to find work for a while...

The population growth of your country was well ahead of your job growth. Last I checked (about 8 months ago), Bush had just about a perfect record. Of fail.
