The phrase "took off like a herd of turtles" is, to the best of my knowledge, very obscure.
As far as I know, its only literary appearance came by way of Mickey Spillane.
I have only heard it used in speech by older Appalachian folk and is sometimes used as a substitution for "took off like Snyder's hound".
If you please, only vote for this if you have heard of one of them.
