So, subby, 3 million HIV-positive people in the US is OK?

Farktard.

If there were only real easy ways to not get HIV. I feel bad for all those that got it before anyone knew what it was and all those that got it through blood transfusions. Everyone else, not so much.

RTFA

It says 600,000

Now who's the farktard? (I'm not subby, just for the record)

True, it is terrible, but obviously not an epidemic.

SoothinglyDeranged: but obviously not an epidemic.

Bigger than the SARS or Bird Flu epidemic.

FYI...

Number of deaths for leading causes of death

Heart disease: 652,486
Cancer: 553,888
Stroke (cerebrovascular diseases): 150,074
Chronic lower respiratory diseases: 121,987
Accidents (unintentional injuries): 112,012
Diabetes: 73,138
Alzheimer's disease: 65,965
Influenza/Pneumonia: 59,664
Nephritis, nephrotic syndrome, and nephrosis: 42,480
Septicemia: 33,373

The real question is how will it affect the price of gas? Thats a good guage of how much I care. I am the average Joe and I don't really care, I work 5 days and drink the other two.

Until AIDS starts ripping though the suburbs nobody will care, it's sad but it's also true, you should probably get used to it folks.

"12% more than cancer" sounds pretty bad.

willywanka: for the life of me I don't understand why people get upset about wanting to fight/cure a disease.

Here's why. The amount of money spent on AIDS is completely ridiculously disproportionate to the number of people affected. The money spent there could do so much more than it is, but it's being held hostage by a fringe group of wackos. That's why. AIDS is the new hotness, malaria, dysentary, you know, things that actually kill a lot of people and can be easily prevented or cured by sending a little more cash their way are ignored because who cares, EVERYONE EITHER HAS AIDS OR WILL HAVE IT SOON SO PAY PAY PAY PAY F*CK MALARIA RIGHT IN THE ASS

i'm trying to assess the motivation of such a trolling strawman thread title.

first of all, the real crisis is in africa - most people acknowledge that aids has become much less of a problem here in the us, primarily due to education.

secondly, even though that may be the case - what the fark is the point of this thread? are you saying that aids gets too much attention? are you saying that 600,000 people with an incurable disease is nothing to worry about?

or are you one of those people who lives in 1985 and thinks that aids is god's punishment for homosexuality?

The attention is disproportionate. I blame better marketing.

And there you have it. See, the thing is that no one, to my knowledge, is preventing you from donating to charities that provide research or charity for whatever disease you find more important than AIDS. It's one of the only diseases in the world where people actually get offended by its mere mention, much less the notion that anyone else would want to contribute to its cure.

If you want to contribute to better malaria vaccinations and treatments or means for preventing dysentery, you can do this freely, and no one will tell you that the money would be "better spent" on a disease that they find to be more urgently pressing or dire. Hell, you could set up a donation for Tourette's disease research, with a site describing in great detail the effects and the misery it inflicts, and people will universally commend you for it, despite no one actually dying from it. But talk about AIDS, and people get infuriated that it is even mentioned, and proceed to do whatever they can to belittle its effects or severity.

Like I said, I just don't see why people would get upset about anyone wanting to help cure or treat a disease.

Sorry, I was pretty unclear there... that's total cancer deaths (from peck's stat above) or 553,888 as compared to AIDS infections at 600,000.

Yes, I realize that infection != death... unless you're talking about AIDS. Seems to have a pretty good batting average.

willywanka: for the life of me I don't understand why people get upset about wanting to fight/cure a disease.

It gets between 10-100x the money and attention as more mundane diseases and causes of death get. The problem is especially bad in some parts of Africa, where kids are dying of malaria, famine, etc and AIDS patients get treated in state of the art clinics with antiretroviral combo drug therapy. It's absurd.

2008-01-30 6:57:59 PM
1% sounds like a frickin big deal.

And to compare AIDS, a 99.9% preventable disease, to cancer, maybe a 5% preventable disease, is just retarded.

Way back when AIDS first became a problem, gay groups were concerned that it was perceived as a disease that only struck a small minority of people. So they started this "you could get it, your granny could get it, your kitty could get it!" propaganda. And it went on long enugh that people believe it, and you're a blasphemer if you suggest it's not true.

Guess what? It's not true. As a hetero, I have about the same chance of catching AIDS as getting hit by lightning. Now, roughly 100 people in North America get hit by lightning every year, so it could happen, but the odds are pretty long.

I should have said "as a hetero who doesn't do drugs." Of course, sticking a dirty needle in your arm is about as smart as standing in a thunderstorm with a steel rod in your hands, so I like the comparison.

Uchiha_Cycliste: Soooo.... Everyone who does drugs with needles is gay.

This.

The chance of contracting AIDS from having unprotected gay sex with a guy who is HIV positive is about 1/500. This chance is severely reduced with protection (and is even smaller in hetero or lesbian sex). AIDS is not an STD, in the sense that it is transmitted primarily through sex. Sure, the chance of sexual transmission is greater in homosexual males, but it is not a gay problem.

AIDS in the US = Meh

It's entirely preventable. I say as a service for public heath, everyone should be tested when they renew their driver's license. If they are positive, they get a tattoo on their wrist showing that they're a potential public heath hazard. Do the same for immigrants. 20-30 years down the line, tada, no more AIDS in the US.

As for Annual Deaths, from the CDC (2002):
AIDS = 17,557
Drunk Driving = 16,885 (2005)
Assault = 17,638
Lung infection = 17,593
Kidney Failure = 20,261
Liver Failure = 27,257
Septicemia = 33,865
The Flu = 58,866

There's a bunch more, including cancer and heart disease. But as you can see, AIDS is about 1/5 of an 'epidemic' as the common flu.

2008-01-30 7:31:28 PM
Yes, I realize that infection != death... unless you're talking about AIDS. Seems to have a pretty good batting average.

AIDS != HIV. I didn't RTFA so I am not sure which they were talking about. I think there is about 20 year average time of survival from HIV diagnosis right now. That will likely go up in the coming years. HIV is becoming more survivable. Full blown AIDS on the other hand has a much shorter expectancy.
