It'll be a gas. I'm sure they'll get all fired up for this one.

I'm fine with people who want to commemorate the Holocaust, but next to drunk, half-naked people busy shouting and trying to hook-up during a farking parade? Not really.

This reminds me of a Thanksgiving Day parade fiasco I was involved in several years back. It was a similar concept, except it was a pile of dead Armenians.

Sheesh. God forbid anyone think about the Armenian Genocide on Turkey Day. Lousy parade commission.

Tatsuma: I'm fine with people who want to commemorate the Holocaust

I get annoyed at the term "The Holocaust" because too many people view it as the killing of 6 million Jews and seem to not realize that nearly as many non-Jews were also killed.

Do you get angry at the term anti-semitism because Jews are not the only semites around?

I think the term fits well enough to describe all atrocities comitted by the Nazi regime at the time. People of Jewish faith understand and realize they were not the only ones victimized by this event, but since Hitler specifically had a real burn going against Jews, they are more likely to be the focal point when we remember it.

It was a Holocaust, by all relevant linguistic definition. Now if they specifically referred to it as "The Jewish Holocaust," then people who represent other faiths and social ilks would have more reason to be offended.

Don't forget, it's just one of many ways we get to rejoice in our blood-boiling hatred of Hitler and the Third Reich.

Tatsuma: Do you get angry at the term anti-semitism because Jews are not the only semites around?

No. But when they use that phrase to describe, say, an Arab's distaste for Jews, I find it annoying. It's like calling a black man a racist for calling another black man "[n-word]".

You'll also notice I said "annoyed", not "angry".

Don't get me wrong. If Jews refer to it as the Holocaust and refer to only the damage done to "their people", then fine. A bit selfish, but fine. It's the fact that so many others seem to either not care -- or worse, not even know -- that so many others were killed as well and when they think of "The Holocaust" they only think of half its victims.

Don't forget, it's just one of many ways we get to rejoice in our blood-boiling hatred of Hitler and the Third Reich.

I wouldn't say "hate". They had such snappy uniforms. And the flag was pretty, though they've pretty much ruined the swastika.

2008-01-29 5:02:57 PM
let me amend that: if any group is talking about their culture, and their culture's hardships, and talks about the Holocaust and its effect on their culture (ignoring the effect it had on others) then fine -- that's a contextual thing.

It's the, what seems to me, to be the rampant ignorance of too many others that annoys me, so I avoid the term altogether.

(Reuters)2008-01-29 [Main] When making a float for the Rio Carnival, you might assume that your holocaust themed pile-o-bodies might not be cool with everyone (pic)

I heard that a group of homosexual necraphiliacs were in the area. Therefore, they wanted them out of there FAST.

Viradouro's parade theme is "Shockers" and it includes floats depicting the shock of birth, the shock of horror and the shock of cold.

Barrossaid the Holocaust float would be the only one without dancers on top.

"If we had people dancing on top of dead bodies that would indeed be disrespectful," he told Reuters.

Ya think?

And who the hell thought up this theme? Parades are supposed to be *fun*.

The best way to make a dead body float is to take your foot off its head.

No doubt. "Holocaust" should not lead people to think "Oh, yeah, you remember, bra...right before that hot chick showed us her ginormous tits! Woooo!! Holocast rulez!!!"

ArcadianRefugee: various words

For what it's worth, you're the only person I've ever heard saying that the holocaust only refers to the Jews. (even if you're only saying that other people think it... you're still the only person I've ever heard it come from).

Also- I admit that I don't know the numbers on this, but was there not a much larger number of Jews that were killed in the holocaust? Not that the other people don't matter, but it's logical that the most attention would be paid to the group who was most affected.

gorgor: The best way to make a dead body float is to take your foot off its head.

Or 16 gallons of ice cream, 32 gallons of root beer, and a dead body.

wouldn't want genocide to be edgy, eh?

/hey, my pop tarts are done!

So, lemme see... Images of Christ or the Virgin Mary are barred from the parade because they might offend some groups of people but a big stack of "dead bodies" representing the holocaust is acceptable.

Makes perfect FARK-ing sense.

I hear it all the time.

6 million Jews died and 12 million total were killed in the Holocaust.

All I can think of is, this float would be a great place to stash a real dead body, assuming you had an extra one you didn't want to be caught with...

dahmers love zombie: Fake?

Pussies.

The really sad part is that in Rio you could probably gather up a floatfull of real ones in the favelas in a couple of months.

It's an awful idea owing to context, but I don't doubt the sympathy is genuine. It's also quite unfortunate that it is being done when there are such brutal conditions much closer to home.

I'd like to be snarky about this, and honestly tried, but I can't quite bring myself to it. Does this mean I'm going to have to retire my Fark account on grounds of oversensitivity?

Next time you take something off Stormfront and you want to make it look like you found that on GIS, you need to understand that other people can do GIS, search for 10 pages and never see that.

Personalized search, locales, etc. Google searches aren't identical.
