Well, she's standing out there in the middle of the harbor in a nightgown with a beckoning beacon and come-hither crown, so she's sort asking for it.

Maybe it's New York they don't like. A lot of people and probably aliens too don't like New York because it's full of shiatheads, and the Statue is a representation of New York.

I'm kidding about the shiathead part

I was going to hotlink one of their photos and make a comment about it, but then I saw the file size. I predict that this server will crash and burn within an hour.

Let's all hope that that server is inside old liberty herself, so that hilarity may ensue.

I've always wondered why Al Quida didn't fly into her. I mean, that would have made quite a statement if you think about it.

Plus the melting point of copper is higher than steel and jet fuel simply wouldn't have been able to melt it requiring the government to secretly place charges around the base to detonate so that she would collapse.

You're pretty close. It's 3 feet. When I was a kid, I always assumed it was like 30 feet across.

Ugh, exactly. When they protested Cloverfield over that was the last straw. I was already pretty apathetic due to overuse as a political bludgeon but that's seriously it, I will never again give a damn about a single thing that mentions, references, or otherwise relates to 9/11.

Given the size of the planes involved, I'd hazard a guess to say: 1. The Statue is small and right above the water. Rather difficult to hit with somewhat amateur pilots. 2. The plane likely would have survived the hit. That is to say, barring a perfect strike, the plane would have ended up skidding to a stop either in the water or on the shoreline. Survivability would be tremendous compared to the actual events.

From full throttle to stop, without the aid of undercarriage, on water? Um...

bigpeeler: I've always wondered why Al Quida didn't fly into her. I mean, that would have made quite a statement if you think about it.

They had to save that until later. See, right before the 2008 elections, Cheney will remotely control Al Queda will fly a plane into the statue. Then, Bush will declare the elections to be postponed until further notice at which point he will remain in power.

It needs to be blown up anyway. To make an icon more representative of the actual populus, I suggest we replace the statue of liberty with a replica of Tetsuo right near the end of Akira, where he's the giant blob-monster.

I've noticed it's always New York City, period, that seems to get it. Is that because if they did a place like Baltimore, it would be more of a feelgood story and less of a disaster movie?

I often imagine the Statue of Liberty hunkered down, in absolute, mind shattering terror, in the corner of some dark room in the basement of the White House. As she watches good ole Dick and Georgie, the boy who would be King, take turns raping the Constitution.

Poor old girl.

This post is full of win.

The Statue of Liberty things was the absolute stupidest part of Cloverfield. (Which is saying something, since there was plenty.)

So we have this stupid baby (according to JJ Abrams) sea monster flopping around New York causing death and destruction along with its fleas. But the first thing it does when it gets to NYC is rip the head off the Statue of Liberty and chuck it several miles into Manhattan. Yeah, right.

People outside the US have no idea what the fark Baltimore looks like, or care at all about Baltimore. It's always NYC or LA or San FRan because foreign audiences recognize them.
