FTA (first sentence): Producers of mozzarella and Italy's health authorities tried to reassure consumers on Friday that an outbreak of buffalo disease and the pile-up of rubbish in Naples were not tainting the buffalo milk used in the cheese.

I'm glad the producers of Italy's healt authorities were able to join the mozzarella producers in this reassuring.

I can't believe their government allowed such a historically and gastronomically important city such as Naples become a festering, filthy trash heap. It's pathetic.

There's nothing wrong with that headline. It's not incoherent at all.

I am a cheese snob and absolutely love cheese! Fresh mozzarella is great stuff and to be fair I've only had one brand made with water buffalo milk.

It had an aftertaste that left much to be desired. Aside from that it's quality cheese. Good luck getting anyone to eat the stuff once they learn what animal it is though. This type of cheese is serious business in Italy. You wouldn't screw with a Texan and his gun now would you?

agreed, so long as you are familiar with the Italian's love for Buffalo Mozzarella, and are up on world events (garbage strike). Which is some of the best stuff in the world.

I suppose knowledge of world-culture and events isn't required for a login here.

No, you're not weird. It's a perfectly coherent headline.

You can make it about anything in that format, really.

"Economic news, housing slump drive market down."
Just because it's about something in Naples doesn't make it incoherent.

buffalo != "bufala"

What we call a "bufalo" is actually a "bison".

What Italians call "Bufala" is similar to a water buffalo.

True fresh mozzarella is, but you can make it from cow's milk just fine. Not enough water buffalo in the US to satisfy the demand that pizza creates.

Naples, It's a mess.

1. You've got the Comorrah, or mafia. They've got the contracts for garbage and hazardous waste but they just dump the stuff in fields or burn it. Lots of collection but not much correct disposal. Kickbacks and corruption. Contaminated soil. Makes you afraid to eat the local produce. Significant increase in lung and liver tumors in the 'Cancer Triangle'.

2. You've got Not In My Backyard. They need new landfills and incinerators but no one will agree to host them. Nobody wants to be downwind of the new incinerator. Even if they agreed on where it could go it would be three years before it really came online.

3. You've got the Neapolitan 'Not My Problem' attitude. They have beautiful home and business interiors but no sense of responsibility for the common areas. They'll take care of their family, but not the community as a whole. Consequently, no trash pickup? OK, we'll just dump it out here in the street. Not my problem.

It would be funny if it weren't getting dangerous. Now they're closing schools and spraying to disinfect. I can't imagine what it will be like when it get's warm.

Daily I take a plastic bag of garbage out in the car, drive by one of those piles, and fling it out. I used to be a little sheepish about it but not any more.

Then all the palm trees are dying from a Chinese butterfly/grub. We had 7 beautiful palms in the lawn 5 months ago. 2 are left. There won't be a palm in Naples in 5 years.

I've been on 'vacation' since arriving in Aug. May be getting a teaching job in a couple of weeks. Not overjoyed but it beats sitting around for 3 years. Sort of. We have cable and I could watch Discovery/History channels all day long. In fact, I do. Shouldn't I be out learning Italian and reveling in the local culture? You try it. Soggy pizza and limp, oily, overpriced food. $8/gal gasoline. Smoke from the trashfires. Hookers lining the roads. Stupid/inconsiderate/agressive/suicidal drivers.

But they've got the best capuccino in the world. I'll give them that.
