No one ever compares them to such Democrat greats as Gary Hart...Dukakis...Walter Mondale...Geraldine Ferraro...Carter.

Well, if either of them end up w/ a bullet in their head there might be a legitimate comparison.

Good point.

At least they have more options than the Regan-fest the Republican party has become.

All the cnadidates do is talk about how they are more like Regan than the other people and all the right wing pundits do is debate who was the most like regan.

farking hell.

What a terrible thing to say about Yoko.

But don't forget it was President John F. Kennedy who initiated the original bill and Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy was the only person in his cabinet who insisted that he send it to Capitol Hill.

And it was Eisenhower who sent troops to Arkansas. What's this story supposed be about?

FluffPo, ClintCo, Obama the CANDIDate, RFK, MLK and JFK?

Comparing Obama to RFK JFK and MLK does have a certain amount of traction and resonance.

He's the closest thing to a populist/ idealist candidate these times are likely to produce.

The fact that if the powers-that-be get stymied and Obama actually manges to get elected over ClintCo, despite the fact that fix is in, he will be a candidate fer the same fate as all of the above is a part of that perception.

Comparing Shrillary to any of the above makes me throw up a bit in the back of my throat.

Obama '08

I liked Cheney better when he did romantic comedies.

None of these are like the others. At least JFK believed in lower taxes. I am sure that Obama and Edwards don't run trains on Hollywood actresses then have them killed.

What could possibly go wrong? You would double the "ass's" used in describing them!

FTA: [Goldwater] opposed not only the Civil Rights Act but also Medicare and Medicaid and all of the other social programs that were being fought over during the Kennedy-Johnson era.

The article associates Goldwater with "racist white Southerners". However, was his opposition to federal civil rights legislation due to old fashioned racism or because he perceived such laws as unconstitutional?

You could be sympathetic to race relations while still voting down the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Such laws should have either been passed at the state level and/or incorporated into the Constitution. The CRA is yet another law that makes an end-run around the Constitution through the Commerce Clause.

Funny, but Obama really doesn't have the gun-slinging constervationist image going on to any appreciable degree, and he's not a veteran famous for running a particularly tough and/or ruthless bit of the military through famous battles... so I'm gonna have to ask you to clarify the analogy on #3, there.

2008-01-16 3:05:15 PM
Jim_Callahan: so I'm gonna have to ask you to clarify the analogy on #3, there.

Take the Thomas Bailey quote and replace Roosevelt with Obama:
"Roosevelt was a great personality, a great activist, a great preacher of the moralities, a great controversialist, a great showman. He dominated his era as he dominated conversations....the masses loved him; he proved to be a great popular idol and a great vote getter."

Or you could have believed that blacks were inferior.

DaSwankOne: Or you could have believed that blacks were inferior.

Or you could be historically accurate and know that Goldwater and the conservatives of the time did not apply conservatism to social engineering of any kind.......including that espoused by the conservative Christians and later embraced by the party.

Or you could know that Goldwater did not believe that Goldwater was afraid to stand up to the employers and make them offer equal oppurtunity to all Americans.

Hillary has probably killed more civilians than Kennedy but Kennedy definitely killed more than Obama and Edwards. Plus neither of them killed Monroe.

I'm a cracker, so this kind of logic just flies right over my head. Obviously, I need remedial reprog^H^H^H^H^Hrace sensitivity training. Please, for my own sake, have my local thought police notified immediately.

DaSwankOne: Or you could have believed that blacks were inferior.

That certainly applies to the southern Democrats who voted against the proposed bill, but I've never read or heard a quote that suggests that Goldwater's motivation was anything other than being an anti-federalist.

/Vote Zombie Barry Goldwater in 2008

What could go wrong? Well, first of all, it'll result in all kinds of whiny emo posts complaining that the comparisons were made. And that's good enough reason to not make them in the first place, subby.

Obama and Hillary and are like MLK and JFK in the sense that they both love white women.

Hillary is like RFK in the sense that she is in a position of power solely because of her family.

"A lot of so-called conservatives today don't know what the word means," he told the Los Angeles Times in a 1994 interview. "They think I've turned liberal because I believe a woman has a right to an abortion. That's a decision that's up to the pregnant woman, not up to the pope or some do-gooders or the religious right. It's not a conservative issue at all."

During the 1990s, Mr. Goldwater spoke out in favor of allowing gays to serve in the military, and he worked in Phoenix to end job discrimination against gays. In 1994, he became honorary chairman of a drive to pass a federal law preventing job discrimination against gays.

"The big thing is to make this country, along with every other country in the world with a few exceptions, quit discriminating against people just because they're gay," he said. "You don't have to agree with it, but they have a constitutional right to be gay. And that's what brings me into it."

Shaggy_C Abe Lincoln was a racist too...what's your point? They have more in common than they do different from oneanother.

Please explain to me how the differences of Teddy's being a War-monger, white-supremist, New-Yorker, imperialist... and what the hell- big game hunter, are outweighed by the similarities between the two men.

Wotchu talkin' 'bout Willis?

Huma aint a white girl.

Is funny. According to urban legend Hillary adores a gal named Huma and Bill uses a gal as a Humidor.

Okay, maybe that's just me laffin' there.

Hillary is like RFK in the sense that she is in a position of power solely because of her family.

Also folks felt sorry fer both of them. RFK cos his brother got killed and Hillary cos Bill couldn't keep it in his pants.

Marylin Monroe reference. I think RFK and JFK had something to do with her death, and they both had relations with her (possibly at the same time).
