I love living in Florida, however, I will never entrust my children to the public school systems here. Private school all the way, even if it breaks me financially to do it.

To see where your state ranked: Results of the 2002 Smartest State Award

North Carolina as 24th smartest state? That's a shock! We're usually next to last in the rankings for education!
2002-10-21 11:05:43 AM
I'll punch in my vote for that!
2002-10-21 11:08:38 AM
George Carlin said it all...

Florida is an 80's kind of State,

Average temperature is in the 80's
Average age is in the 80's
Average IQ is in the 80's
2002-10-21 11:08:53 AM
"By and By"? wtf?
2002-10-21 11:13:47 AM
Stop the presses!!!
There has to be some mistake. Kentucky is ranked 28th??? Above California. Now I KNOW the results are flawed.

Must be due to the addition of a second room onto most school houses, that and pencils!
2002-10-21 11:16:39 AM
Surely Mr. Barry reads the newspaper from time to time??? I mean, he writes a column - he MUST read the newspaper, yes???

On the other hand - advice to Mr. Barry: "suck it up and deal with it..."
2002-10-21 11:22:59 AM
Crazy_horce - who is smarter, a hillbilly or a gangmember??
2002-10-21 11:23:26 AM
I lived in Tennessee for 4 years; perhaps not the dumbest state but I sure has to be close:

Supreme Court Rules Tennesseans Are Sentient Beings

FYI, I was in NY 18 years prior to TN and TX for 3 1/2 since.
2002-10-21 11:24:55 AM
CoolBeans, I think Mr. Barry was making fun of the fact that Florida wasn't 50th, which he thought they should be.

I'm a little confused by your statement.
2002-10-21 11:25:40 AM
...always smooth when you knock smarts and then go and say, "but I sure has to be."

Alton:- plus you told him not to call you Shirley.
2002-10-21 11:27:27 AM
The most stupid state ? Making me curious, I wonder what the rudest state would be. My pick for #1 is ... Massachusetts (I live here so I have firsthand data).
Our state slogan (free of charge) should be: "Massachusetts: WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU LOOKING AT ?!?!?"
2002-10-21 11:28:00 AM
Hmm looky there my state is ranked first.
2002-10-21 11:28:35 AM
Wyoming is ranked 8th smartest? Have these people ever BEEN here? The local 9th grade science class teaches "energy conservation"! When I was in 9th grade, we learned about the peiodic chart of the elements!
Of course, that was in the Carter years...
2002-10-21 11:29:23 AM
We may be a stupid state but at least we don't have sniper asshats waiting to shoot you in the head when you fill up your gas tank!
2002-10-21 11:34:56 AM
Texas is # 16??????
Holy shiat! This country really is going to Hell. Most people I meet (I live in Texas) are more stupid than mole rat on crack.
2002-10-21 11:35:36 AM
Squirts on a porn gem, aye?
2002-10-21 11:37:10 AM
So I did a little research into this ''Morgan Quitno Press,'' which as you may know can be rearranged to spell ''Squirts on a Porn Gem."

Oh my, that is teh funny.
2002-10-21 11:37:37 AM
LOL, coolbeans is from florida!
2002-10-21 11:38:46 AM
Ok, now I'm confused by CoolBeans and Jay_vee. Do I need more coffee or did I step into some Fark Twilight Zone??

heads toward coffee pot...
2002-10-21 11:41:29 AM
Stupidest state=matrimony
2002-10-21 11:47:37 AM
I wish someone would do a survey on the dumpiest states.

New Mexico would get number one for that.
2002-10-21 11:49:36 AM
My NJ at #4. Wow.
2002-10-21 11:58:29 AM
Alton, Impaler: my bad - looks like I could use a third or fourth cup of coffee (argh). Probably should think about changing careers - air traffic control is just too stressful. Perhaps I should try nuclear engineering?
2002-10-21 11:58:58 AM
Woo-hoo! My beloved Nevada comes screaming in just ahead of Florida! #46!

Who whoulda thunk one of the dumbest states would have a pot legalization question on the ballot this year? Go Nevada!
2002-10-21 11:59:53 AM
The stupidest farker? Whoever submitted this article with "stupidist" misspelled in the title.
2002-10-21 12:00:39 PM
I think the "stupidist" is whoever submitted this link.
2002-10-21 12:01:58 PM
Jaqqalax... get out of my head.
2002-10-21 12:05:53 PM
So when do we get a Dave Barry Tag?

BTW, has anyone read his new Novel? I noticed it at the bookstore but didn't have the money. Is it worth a read?
2002-10-21 12:07:33 PM
CoolBeans: my bad - looks like I could use a third or fourth cup of coffee (argh). Probably should think about changing careers - air traffic control is just too stressful. Perhaps I should try nuclear engineering?

Let me get this straightyou are an air trafic controller, on fark and at work... oh this makes me feel safe
2002-10-21 12:09:04 PM
Yaaa, go Florida!
2002-10-21 12:15:19 PM
Wow, New Hampshire came in lowest of all New England states. I truly didn't expect that.

As far as common sense (particularly in political circles), I would have figured Massachusetts would be lower.

If you're talking about "book larnin'" the I would have expected us to at least beat Maine. They've got a far higher redneck percentile.
2002-10-21 12:16:53 PM
Floridiots!!! That says it all.
2002-10-21 12:21:30 PM
I think it's the 2000 election that really put Florida over the top on this one.

I lived in Alabama for a while, which I hated, but I must say that it's definitely not as stupid as people think. They just happen to get the dumbest, most inbred people into the media the most.
2002-10-21 12:23:32 PM
Which is worse: being born and raised here or voluntarily choosing to live her?

2002-10-21 12:27:11 PM
UnmovedMover: Havent read it myself, but his last novel, which got turned into the movie "Big Trouble" was great, I'm going to put the new one on my christmas list.
2002-10-21 12:28:27 PM
10! Not bad. Rhode Island, that is. Not a bad ranking for a state who had coffee milk and Del's lemonade duke it out for official state drink. Don't remember who won. Hogans- I work in Newington, NH. New Hampshire deserves to be the lowest. Once you leave the UNH campus, it's like Buttfark, Alabama.
2002-10-21 12:29:55 PM
What's surprising is that Maryland is #30.

Maryland is the armpit of the East Coast.
2002-10-21 12:30:35 PM
I actually live in Lawrence, KS... and I don't know where this Morgan Qinto Press is... unless it's a division of Allen Press here in town... or part of Hallmark.
2002-10-21 12:31:09 PM
probably the best article I have ever read on fark to date!!!
2002-10-21 12:36:27 PM
woo-hoo! Go Minnesota!
2002-10-21 12:38:35 PM
I think Dave Barry articles should get the Hero tag. He really is a national treasure.

Florida is the dumbest, and you can never take that away from us.
2002-10-21 12:39:26 PM
Heh... NY is 26th and NH is 19th, I'm pretty sure that my roomate is to blame for that. He's from NH but goes to college here in NY. oh man that kid just has no idea...
2002-10-21 12:40:57 PM
Whatever. Dave loves being so cute. Being an expatriate myself from Kansas (NO!), I'd say they've got a bargain there compared to some hellholes I've been to out here.

I've never met so many crazy, intelligent fired-up people as I did in Kansas. It's just that sooner or later the tendency is to get sucked into doing that practical thing and forsake your creativity and GROW UP damnit, and so that's why I left.

I'd say Florida gets my vote (as seen through my FARK glasses) although like Washington, it's not fair to bash the population in general as being shtoopid because there are SO FEW NATIVES.

10-21-02 12:30:35 PM BjorkyI actually live in Lawrence, KS... and I don't know where this Morgan Qinto Press is... unless it's a division of Allen Press here in town... or part of Hallmark.
If memory serves, I think they're at 9th & New Jersey, or in terms I can surely remember ... just east of The Botteneck.

2002-10-21 01:28:48 PM
Minnesota > All
2002-10-21 03:09:39 PM
My fark glasses show Ohio as pumping out some of the more interesting stories (behind Florida, of course!). And I used to live in Ohio, too!
