(Wall Street Journal)   Obvious: Congress sends Bush a $516 billion spending bill with 8,993 earmarks. Not so much: They skipped some steps in the budget process, meaning Bush could cut all the pork out if he wants without a line-item veto   (opinionjournal.com) divider line

Right, because the last thing a president should ever do is work with the elected officials in Congress.

/Unless he's a douche.
//Which he is.

He does work with Congress. He tells them what to do, and they roll over like a good biatch.

The White House is at a crossroads. "If Bush were to do the right thing on earmarks it would an attention-getting precedent that could make other budget reforms possible," says Alison Fraser, who heads up economic policy for the Heritage Foundation. "It's a legacy-building moment."

I'm going to hold my breath on this one.

At this point, his taking a crap is a legacy building moment, given what little foundation the last 7 years have laid for his legacy.

Nonsense. He's been shiatting on things pretty much nonstop for the bulk of his time in office. Another big dump isn't even worthy of a footnote, unless it rivals the one after the Midland Chilifest of 'aught three.

He'll only cut the earmarks that don't go directly to *his* favorite contractors. Putting money in the competition's pocket is the same as taking it out of your own.

This little fact always pisses me off about the rampaging "pork busters". Hey you stupid prick, see the F16s flying over the SuperBowl? That is where your money goes dipshiat. Fighting that waste makes you unpatriotic instead of a balanced budget maverick though.

Cut it George, be a conservative for once.

From the article:

Federal agencies would still be obligated to spend the dollars appropriated by Congress. But they could use the money higher priorities that would benefit all taxpayers, rather than on favors for special interests or political donors.

Does anyone really think that federal bureacrats who go begging to Congress every year for funds aren't going to spend money on legislator's pet projects? I seriously doubt it. If they did their budget would be a lot smaller the following year.

It's like his senior year in high school. He doesn't care, and he'll do what he wants. And like one of his teachers, I'll humor him just to get him out the door. Do what you want, Dubya, you're history next January anyways. And make sure you don't leave any of your cronies behind either.

Although in the end we might have been as worse off, I'd have rather seen Jeb Bush in the White House. In four years, we might get that opportunity to vote for him.

well, to be honest, if he cuts the pork, you won't see a dime.

it would help a very small amount to reduce the budget deficit, which would in turn very slightly slow the growth of the debt. but either way, you won't see a dime.

cutting things from the budget and cutting things from the revenue stream are not the same thing.

$5,160,000,000.00 USD is a lot of money, yes.

But it's only enough to build 5 new stadiums for the Dallas Cowboys. I like to think of large amounts of money in CowboyStadium units...

For example, we are spending about 30 CowboyStadia a month in Iraq. Our national debt is about 7 trillion now? That's about 1400 CowboyStadia. One per every 200,000 US citizens.
