Earth to NASA:

Could we like, GET AWAY from shooting up expensive airplane looking things that can't even leave Earth's atmosphere and like START BUILDING REAL SPACESHIPS AGAIN? You know? That could REACH one of Jupiter's moons? Anyone? Anyone?

This would require actually making human progress a priority. The US government spends over 70% of its discretionary budget on the military and war (~ 700 billion). Of the rest, we spend less than 15 billion each on college loans/aid, space travel, and non-space research, respectively. As a result, the US basically has to wait for the private sector to do anything for it to actually happen.

We could make something like fusion a priority and hardly even touch the military budget. Yet it seems that those who make the decisions are content with humanity not making it further than the moon not just in the 20th century, but in the 21st as well.

Maybe they'll launch it, maybe.

You mean like Galileo or Cassini? I guess you're talking about manned ships... ok then.

We really should add this to the FAQ.

During a thread about homeschooling, many farkers were bashing home-schoolers. One particular home-schooler, in an effort to fight back against the brutish internet tough guys who were hurting his wittle feelings, decided to make a post about his life achievements to prove how cool he was. He attached a picture of his pretty wife as further proof of such.

This, however, backfired as it provided Fark with another cliche. We are now all on a continued quest to prove just how stupid an idea it is to post your wife's picture (possibly without her approval) on the intertubes.

I believe they meant to say 'lunch', as in bas lunches for the astronauts would be sent into space to feed the hungry astromen and women in orbit. Sandwiches will be safe to send, as any crumbs will quickly be cleaned up by the infamous Space Vacuum.

2008-01-04 7:36:52 PM
While a very poor headline, I'm not sure it's redundant.

FTA: "But the next launch attempt was more likely to happen in early February".

So it sounds like they will launch (as in start) the shuttle launch in January but don't expect launch (as in take-off) to actually happen until February. They might have been trying to be cute with the play in words. but.... FAIL (and I don't have the graphic)

2008-01-04 7:37:22 PM
My post should have read 'BAG lunches'. My appologies. You may now hurl handfuls of mashed potatoes at me.

aw subby, you make my cockles swoon...

2008-01-04 7:45:52 PM
I have great confidence the shuttle will launch on time because it was scientically designed by scientists!

However, the original thread has been pulled. It was there as recently as yesterday. Despite the treatment the pic received, she is pretty. But as mentioned above, it's usually not a good idea plop a photo like that in a place full of Photoshop piranhas.

Ah yes, but do you have great confidence that the shuttle launch will launch on time because of it's scientifically designed by scientists design that you are confident of?

EthelPP: Their headline ranks right up there with PIN Number, VIN Number, and ink pen.

Pens can contain things other than ink, like white-out or opaquing material. Although I've heard some people say "personal PIN number".

The space shuttle is what happens when politicians have the final say on the overarching design of something. Ewwww.

I was running a roleplaying game or something like that once when one of the players asked if a city had a Department of Redundancy Department. Without missing a beat I responded that it had several.

And yet the dozens who have done the same in their profiles are not subject to this quest. Meanwhile this guy gets to see his wife referred to as a babe regularly. So I'd say it's failing.

FORTRAN, slide rules, engineers who knew WTF they were doing, and management who knew when to STFU and get out of the way. These conditions may not be present in wherever you are; if so, FSM help you.
