How'd they figure that out so quickly?

/born yesterday.

Interesting! People who are dumb enough to use AOL are still smart enough to resent pop-ups?
2002-10-15 07:51:16 PM
Has to do with something called Attention span. When these popups open, they forget what they were looking at to begin with.

Or maybe they were having troubles closing the right windows. *Click click - rats!*

/* Smart-a55 annoying announcer voice: You've got ads! *\

Perhaps, but I've discovered that a pop-up is the best way to satisfy my wife.
2002-10-15 08:38:34 PM
I don't care for AOL, but I hope other companies take note.
2002-10-15 08:39:10 PM
I've discovered that a pop-up is the best way to satisfy your wife too.
2002-10-15 08:39:16 PM
They milked the pop-up industry untill it was dead..then turned into the "good guys" by "ditching it" for thier "loving customers" when the popups got unprofitable. Im *sure* if they were still making a bundle off them, they would have stopped offering them. phht....bwahahah.
2002-10-15 08:39:43 PM
I don't know what you people are talking about. I love pop-ups.

You make the rules, you say what's fair, it's lots of fun to have you there

I am a child....I last awhile...

I used to work there. Every day I'd get people calling to cancel because they hated the popups. It was my job to make them not want to cancel (though I really couldn't blame them) but I had to make my money somehow so I basically told them resistance is futile becuase you still get them (though you get more on AOL than anywhere else).

I felt dirty while I was working for them. Good thing that's over with.
2002-10-15 08:43:55 PM
In Roviet Sussia, ads pop you.
2002-10-15 08:45:02 PM
AOL is still in business? I guess they're one of those penny stocks on NASDAQ.
2002-10-15 08:46:13 PM
E-man I find that is also the best way to satisfy your wife.
2002-10-15 08:47:48 PM
They have subscribers?
2002-10-15 08:48:47 PM

Nifty little program that kills pop-ups after you add them to the list. Very convenient.

(How do you make a link clickable?)
2002-10-15 08:49:34 PM
Where would we be without the pop-up ad? I hear George Lucas has decided to film Star Wars Ep. III entirely with X-10 cameras.
2002-10-15 08:49:37 PM
I recommend listening to the song "X-10 Must Die" by Kompressor.
2002-10-15 08:49:45 PM
will sell no more "pop-up" advertising to outside companies
So, AOL will still advertise their retarded products and services?
2002-10-15 08:51:31 PM
AOL is for teenagers and grandmas. I hate it. I hate troubleshooting it. It is all that is evil.
I bet AOL is afraid if all of the (l)users find out about the real internet, their reign will be over.
2002-10-15 08:52:35 PM
Screw adding pop-ups to a list. Panicware's Pop-Up Stopper is free and works automatically.
2002-10-15 08:53:37 PM
AOL, once agian prooving that the stock price won't stop till it matches their IQ.

They needed research to show the nobody likes pop-ups! Have any of those idiots tried using their peice of crap product?

Marketting department guy: It seems, sir, that subscribers don't like other things to pop-up besides what they clicked.

AOL Time-Warner Board Member: Igot mail! Igot Mail! YAAAY!!!
2002-10-15 08:55:30 PM
AOL? Is that l337 for AsshOLe?
2002-10-15 08:55:51 PM
Sure, there's no list, but you gotta buy it.
2002-10-15 08:56:07 PM
I wonder if there are some people that made a bundle off pop up ads for penis enlargement products and cheap ass digital cams. My guess is these people exist then it caught onto the masses and now it's just a trend that will never die.
2002-10-15 08:56:11 PM
Actually they've merely stopped selling popups to third parties. Coming up in version 8: a shiatload of popups for AOL services.

You can dress a monkey and teach him to behave like a human, but it'll still be a monkey.
2002-10-15 08:56:35 PM
in other news: aol still sucks a$$. best pop-up stopper comes from Pop-Up Ad Filter.....though have some morals and disable it every now and then when you're at a nearly financially bankrupt site...
2002-10-15 08:56:36 PM
Yeah, screw popups!

Although DHTML floating windows and Flash are just as bad. Uck.
2002-10-15 08:58:27 PM
How do you make your links clickable? Please tell me, I only have three days to live. It would give meaning to my life.
2002-10-15 08:59:29 PM

All right, the line forms behind me (and my pop-up).
2002-10-15 09:32:43 PM
(jumps in line)
2002-10-15 09:38:54 PM
Why change now? 30 million asshats do seem to mind or they would have switched by now. I say give em twice the pop ups for being so stupid as to use AOL in the first place.
2002-10-15 09:40:54 PM
Use Mozilla and you may never see another pop-up ad again.
2002-10-15 09:42:45 PM

Sounds like Earthlink is kicking their ass. They have anti-popup software for their subscribers now.
2002-10-15 10:51:05 PM
I use that earthlink pop-up blocker as well.
I have not seen a pop-up ad in a while.
Oh, and thanks a lot AOL for polluting ICQ.
2002-10-15 10:53:46 PM
Well, it's my dad that uses Earthlink. He seems happy with it too.
2002-10-15 10:56:40 PM
Real men use Proxomitron.
2002-10-15 11:11:15 PM
I upgraded to their new version 8.0 and I have to tell you, their ads are just as annoying as the old third party ones on version 7. You have to get past one or two to get your welcome screen, and another one or two to log off. They also managed to find a way to have a few more banner ads on the desktop which I have to keep clicking closed as soon as I sign on.

I don't care if these are AOL ads. They are still unwanted ads on a service I pay to subscribe to. I have another ISP too which costs less and doesn't have ads unless I hit a web page which has them.

But that will still happen with AOL 8.0 when cruising the internet. Indeed, if you have another application running at the same time as AOL when one of them pops up, it switches you out of AOL and back to that application. You have to click on AOL twice to get back to your browser.

Bottom line, I only use AOL for e-mail since I have had that darn address for 10 years and chats. If I am doing anything serious, I use my other ISP.
