She's done jack for the people who voted for her and her party, but I'll give her credit, that new menu does look tasty.

She doesn't have the power to do anything. Give her a veto and filibuster proof majority then we'll talk.

People just don't get it... you need a 2/3 majority to override a veto, why is this so farking hard to understand?

See, the whole point of compromise (and this goes for EVERYONE) is to not argue or demand something so ridiculous, that you know will never reach a consensus. Apparently, that's too hard for ANYONE in DC to understand.

At least the Democratic Congress is making an effort at oversight of the Executive. You know, something the Republicans were too lazy to do whilst stealing as much as they possibly could. Do you know why a Republican Congress would even consider a prescription drug bill? They made shiatloads of cash. Why the fark would the U.S. government sign a "do not negotiate the prices" drug bill? The same reason they privatized a large portion of the military and intelligence services.

Market efficiency? Try blind greed.

I'd much prefer a do-nothing Congress that is at least making an effort at oversight to the GOP Rapefest that preceded it.

Zanshi: Can anyone seriously tell me why they were called "French Fries" to begin with? Was it because Americans were making fun of Napolean?

Wiki's got your back:

The straightforward explanation of the term is that it means potatoes fried in the French sense of the verb "to fry" , which can mean either sautéing or deep-fat frying, while its French origin, frire, unambiguously means deep-frying : frites being its past participle used with a plural feminine substantive, as in pommes de terre frites ("deep-fried potatoes").[1][2] Thomas Jefferson, famous for serving French dishes, wrote exactly the latter French expression.[1][3] In the early 20th century, the term "French fried" was being used for foods such as onion rings or chicken, apart from potatoes.[4][5]

while i agree that pelosi and reid are about as spineless as they come, compared to their predecessors hastert and frist, they're superhuman. and compared to the most corrupt congress in history, which preceded them, the dems are doing just fine. at least they're exercising congressional oversight.

and if the GOP weren't filibustering every single damn piece of legislation in the senate (yes, dems did it too - but nowhere near this much) and if the president didn't veto everything that doesn't include massive tax cuts for billionaires and global corporations, maybe something would get done.

all the more reason to vote dem in '08 - give them a filibuster-proof majority and an executive from the same party - just like the GOP had from '02-'06 - and then we'll get some shiat done.

"Give her a veto- and filibuster-proof-majority..."

Regardless, I wasn't aware there was such a thing as a filibuster-proof majority in the House. Do please explain?

Iirc, having 60% lets you over-ride a filibuster. 2/3 to over-ride a veto.

They were invented in Belgium and became popular in France. American Soldiers returning from WWI (I think,) had them in France and dubbed them French Fries when they returned to the States.

Yeah, I am just so disappointed in Diane. She reminds me of that movie "Once we were kings". I don't know what happened. 20 years ago I thought that she would be our first woman president. And then to sell her soul to the devil....Why? She didn't need to.

As for Pelosi I like her but I think that she really oversold what she was able to accomplish and left a lot of people disappointed. It would have been better if she had shut her trap. She plays a good game in the halls of congress but I don't think she fully grasps the fact that being Speaker is a national position, not just the leader of the house.

The spin that dems just need more power would have sounded much more honest if it had be spoken starting Nov.5th, 2006. Now, it just sounds like whining.

Eh, I don't side with the apologists. Besides taking impeachment off the table it's not like they've really fought with Bush to get anything done. They continue to buckle. Yeah they can't override the veto, but they can shut down the government.

I disagree with the statement about filibuster proof majorities in the House. For all intents and purposes, the House is a mob ruled org. 50% + 1 wins just about any vote. About the only thing the minority can do is have someone use the rules that allow the minority leader to request recorded votes for things, but that has to be done for each vote individually and even then it's only good for 20 mins. Unless the Dems are losing then it's good for a little extra time and some weird "new math" where up becomes down and closed vote tallies change.

The House is her fiefdom, she can run it just about any way she wants. Heck she's already changed rules from last congress and made it even harder for the minority to have any input.

The only thing that can screw her up once she actually gets around to doing something is the Senate. There they have to deal with filibusters.

As for veto proof majorities, what the hell does that have to do with getting stuff out of Congress? A veto doesn't mean the Congress can't work on something or pass it over and over, just means that it doesn't make it into law. If it's serious they could pass it and throw a fit when Bush vetoes it making the Repubs look evil and in the way of popular will.

She hasn't done any of that, they just give speeches, request some documents and let things sit on the shelf. As far as passing laws or actually substantive investigations go, she's not done any.

SquirrelsOfDoom: Regardless, I wasn't aware there was such a thing as a filibuster-proof majority in the House. Do please explain?

In the House, debate has time limits, so there's no filibusters. I guess by definition, there's no filibuster-proof majority. In the Senate, cloture requires a 3/5s supermajority, or 60 votes.

Dude, it's the job of a congressman to deal with all the other congressmen to get things done, regardless of their party, and that goes double for the speaker. Basically, what I'm saying is that she fails miserably as a politician and it's her own damned fault for lacking either the conviction or the skill to leverage her agenda properly.

One of the worries when she got appointed speaker in the first place was that she'd be a "San Francisco Democrat", meaning she'd be counterproductively confrontational about stupid things and would pursue symbolic victories rather than any kind of reality-based policy. Honestly, this has borne out as being a fairly accurate description. The Dems should run people of her stripe for president and restrict the senate and house party-men to those with less style and more competence.

//I say this with all love as someone who voted in her district for a while. Anyone who treats national politics in the manner local politics are treated in her area is certainly charming, but also fails at life.

7of7: She doesn't have the power to do anything.

When you lead a Congress where the majority has a very slim lead over the minority, you can still get things done. You just have to be willing to accept compromises.

The Democratic Party seems to be more interested in trying to push their agenda without compromise, though unlike the past few Republican Congresses they lack the numbers to do so.

I guess they want to be able to go back to their constituents when the next election comes around and say "We TRIED, but those evil Republicans wouldn't bend!" and get re-elected. Compromise could be seen as weakness.
